Hi Shipmates! I have had to warn your all about the Mizzen Mast Plans because the scale of all the mast section is incorrect the mizzen lower mast picture is 10mm short, the mizzen topmast picture is 5mm short, the mizzen topgallant mast picture is also 5mm short and the completed mast has the same shorter measurements. To avoid a problem use the measurements given on the plans to mark your dowel and don't mark the dowel from the plan, CHECK TWICE to make sure you have it right. I thought I was going mad! checked over and over again, the mast images has be reduced somehow, I'm pleased to say the mizzen mast top (fighting top) is spot on!. This is not a major problem just be careful and check your measurements before cutting.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArgh
I have used the plans not the measurements, but I think I can get around things if I use the lowest hole for the brass rod,on the Topmast and if I don't push the Lower mast entirely down (as mine is a very tight fit), then that should give the required height. As I've used the plans for the two masts already, I'll stick to the way I've done it, and again use the bottom hole on the Top Gallant, then fingers crossed it shouid be OK

Editorial would like to offer its apologies for the printed dimensions errors on the Mizzen mast Plans that came with issue 77. If you could please ignore the printed dimensions and use the plans as a direct-measuring pattern (ie, as instructed in the steps).

Might be an idea to do this with all the mast plans just in case? TIS

The main and fore mast images are correct for the noted lengths.

Hi Shipmates! Another item that needs to be checked is the height of the pin rail on the mizzen mast the position on the plan is 30mm above the poop deck to the top of the pin rail this would be over 8.2 foot above the deck at full scale! Must be wrong? 30mm x scale 84 =2520mm full size (8.267616 feet) I don't think Nelson had modern day basketball players in his crew to deal with the ropes on those belaying pins. I've checked some plans and the average for this scale would be, the top of the pin rail set about 20mm above the poop deck just above the height of the hammock netting. My findings are below:- On one plan the top of the pin rail is 18mm above the deck. 18mm x scale 96=1728mm full size (5.6692224 feet) 1728mm ÷ scale 84=20.57mm On another plan the top of the pin rail is 17mm above the deck. 17mm x scale 96=1632mm full size (5.3542656 feet) 1632mm ÷ scale 84=19.43mm Now I could be wrong myself? I don't know! If anyone could check other plans or pictures and get back to me I would be grateful.

Having looked at the information i have to hand and the pics i took of the mizzen mast. the bottom of the pin rail appears to be just about in line with the top of the hammock nets. not sure if that helps?! “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Thank You Jase! That does help! I'm going to reduce the high of the pin rail to about 20mm so it looks right. I've just done a dry fit of the lower mast before I add the details to it also dry fitted the mizzen topsail sheet bitts and it looks like the drawings and plans I have will mean some changes are needed for the mizzen topsail sheet bitts as well, that’s more delicate work on the bandsaw GREAT! The changes I'm making is in no way me saying to others not to follow the magazine as with all changes I make DeAGOSTINI cannot be held responsible if I find later in the build that other parts don't fit due to my changes to the kit. First time builder should always follow the instruction as set out in the magazine to be safe. That's why I check my facts and fully research the impact of any extra work I do and have to remake so many parts. I will post all the changes in my build dairy later in this week.
