please help. How fine should one sand the hull? I'm up to 400 grit, still have 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 paper left. I've been at it for a couple of weeks now (with breaks inbetween ) but I'm lazy and don't want to put in unnecessary effort

Ta. How fine is fine? PS. What sanding sealer did you use? The only ones I can find at the hardware store is oil-based (i.e. have to use lacquer thinners to clean brushes) - Don't think the water based paints are going to stick on it.

best to buy it from a model shop ,the oil base one in the hard stores is for finnish off the wood with out painting the tin of sanding sealer you buy in a model shop dont through away the brush or try to clean it let it go hard the next time you use it put it back in the sanding sealer and it will soften a gain in about 10 minutes ready to use again same goes for dope

Agree the sanding sealer should be specialist I use Mantua models sealer you will also require a respirator and a ventilated room! as for the sanding I use... coarse - P80 and an aluminium oxide 80G medium, medium - P150 fine - P240A wet and dry Finish fine scotchbright hope that helps “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Awesome, thanks Jase. I'll finish the model with the P600 that I started with last night. I've been unable to locate sanding sealer, so I'm planning to thin wood-glue with water and use that.

in stead of useing wood glue if painting apply a coat of paint then rub that down with 600 wet and dry ,wet or varnish if warnishing then rub that down anny way sanding sealer is a type of varnish its the rubbing down that gives a key for paint by the way cornwallmodels boats will not send dope or varnish abroad due to postal restrictions

Stefan, Sanding sealer is available from most automotive paint supplies. Use it outside as it has thinners as a carrier agent.

Hi StefanDV
You can also get sanding sealer from most hardware stores in the paint section. I use Plascon sanding sealer. When you sand it with 600/800 grit wet and dry paper then dust is like talc powder and it dries clear so it can be used before varnish without any problem.
Hope this helps

I used Shellac Sanding Sealer and applied it with a lint free cloth.
Both purchased from eBay. The shellac came from ibrownrestoraions. Can't remember the cost but I've only used about a third of a 250ml bottle & also did the decks with it.
It is flammable & a bit smelly so caution is required.

Thanks Wilfy, I ended up spray painting the hull and sanding it down An then filling the evident gaps, ready for another round of sanding.
