Hi Graham, BigGrin

Everything that follows is purely meant for the reason of assistance, not criticism. It appears that you are having numerous issues with screws.

Now, the first thing I notice is that most (not all) of the screws are designated with an "M" at the end. That signifies to me that these are self-tapping screws going into metal.

These screws can be a regular problem for not fully engaging into the hole they should go in. I think nearly everyone knows the "wind it back half a turn and try again" method, but sometimes a bit of swarf can get under the screw and stop it going in any further. So, try taking the screw fully out, blow any residue out and then try again. You have stated 0.75mm, that could easily be a bit of swarf.

As you may know I am building the Infinity Gauntlet and I must have put a couple of hundred self-tappers into metal. If I`m lucky 10% made it in first time, the rest needed the approach above.

Back to the Lotus, I expect the "Official Builder" (Roy) to let me know of any issues with the build and cures to the said issues. As yet nothing reported and I have not had any other reports of a similar nature from anyone. That does not say the issue does not exist, it means that people have sorted it without thinking its a problem.

Hope this gives you another place/method to look for a solution.

Trying to build part 15 and I've run into a bit of a problem.

Looking at the attached picture, part 17I ringed in the top half fits perfectly, but part 15J in the lower picture doesn't.

Parts 15J and 17I are exactly the same part, but I would have expected them to be handed.

Could someone please compare their two parts 15J and 17I to see if they are handed or not as having tried a couple of times, I can't get 15J to sit properly.

Thanks

I've had a good peep at mine and as far as I can see both parts are exactly the same.
I do remember they were a bit of a faff to fit.

Roy.

Thanks for having a look Roy.

I'll have to give it another go later.

Still think they should be handed though.....

I've just finished stage 15 and found exactly the same thing. The left side doesn't look right so I tried it on the right side and it was fine so I removed the other from stage 17 and it was the same. I agree with you, there should be 2 different parts, sided, like you said.

Thanks for having a look Steve. It's not just me then, I was beginning to wonder!

I had to grind quite a bit away to get the LH side to look even remotely right. It still isn't 100%, barely acceptable.

I won't be posting any more build stages as I'm so disappointed with this kit, and I'm not sure if I can be bothered with it. It could be such a lovely build, but there is so much wrong with it. I'm even considering cutting my losses and cancelling the remaining parts.

Admittedly some are very minor, but not being able to fit two pieces together I would class as significant issue. Problems I've encountered in parts 15 - 20

Step 15-7 The wheel spindle wouldn't fit through the brake disk parts 15D,15E & 15F, so I had to make the hole bigger with a remmel spindle grinder.

Step 15-7 I physically couldn't tighten the PM screw anymore for the wheel to seat properly, so I had to shorten the screw by 1mm

Step 15-8 Part 3H was a loose fit, so I applied a drop of craft PVA glue to keep it in place.

Step 15-10 Part 15J doesn't fit at all, I had to grind away part of the hook's base for it to look remotely right.

Step 16-5 As per the other side the two HM Screws were too long and I had to shorten them by 0.75 - 1mm for them to fully tighten

Step 18-7 as per Step 15-7 I had to shorten the screw by 1mm

Step 19-7 To stop part 19K from falling out of part 19G, I had to use some PVA glue.

Step 20-1 Part 20J had a very large moulding flash burr that I had to trim away.

Am I expecting too much. I don't think so.

Good luck to everyone with their builds.

It sounds like with the ph screws that hold the wheels on that you haven't used the plastic washer under the screw

I did double check to see if I had, even with the washer fitted I couldn't tighten the screw enough for it to hold the wheel securely.

I test fitted both washers on one side and the screw held the wheel perfectly, so I knew cutting 1mm off the screw would fix the problem.

I guess having a degree in mechanical engineering is of no use when trying to assemble a DeAgostini F1 car.

Very odd. I've only done one side at the moment but I did drive the screw in first without the wheel attached to see how far it went in and it was fine
