Attic Room Floor and Chair for the Attic

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Attic Floor

Paint the second half of the floor as you did in the previous issue You should be an expert in doing this by now. Once the floor is dry, attach this half of the floor with the other half that you painted in issue 70 by using wood glue. Hold the two parts with masking tape until the glue dries, picture 2.

Assembling the Chair
As stated in the previous issue, I have left the chair assembly until this issue when we receive all the remaining parts.

Using a kraft knife, separate the legs and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Attach the backrest to the slots in the top of the rear leg legs with wood glue, as shown in picture 3.
Glue the two seat parts together making sure the convex edge of the main seat part is at the front, picture 4. Now glue the two legs in place, picture 5, and allow to dry before proceeding with the next step.

Attach the leg assembly to the seat assembly as shown in picture 6, followed by the decorative part to the top of the chair, picture 7.

Paint the whole assembly with white paint, allowing it to dry before painting the chair green as highlighted in the magazine.
Note: I used a green, yellow, blue and white paint to achieve the right colour should you not have the colours specified in the magazine, picture 8.

Take the fabric that came in this issue and cover one side with double sided sticky tape. Place the two seat cushions down, convex side downwards and cut around the cushion as shown in picture 9. Fold the fabric inside the cushion, sticking it around the edges. When both cushions are done, apply some quick drying glue around the underside edges and place the larger cushion on the seat and the smaller cushion on the backrest.

Picture 10 shows the completed assembly of the chair. That completes this issue.

Issue 72

Contents
Exterior Wall Frame, Dessing Table for the Guest Room.

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Exterior Wall Frame (Ground Floor)

Align the slots in strips (1FL-3) and (1FL-6) and fix in place with wood glue as shown in picture 2. Make sure the vertical strip has the shorter tab at the top.

Now attach the other vertical and horizontal strips with the same numbers as shown in picture 3. Stick the strips (1FL-3) and (1FL-1) together making sure the slots are aligned, picture 4.

Take the previous assembly and glue the tabs of the vertical strip you’ve just glued together as shown in picture 5.

Now take the horizontal strips (1FL-2) and (1FL-3) and join them with wood glue, making sure the (1FL-2) is glued over the top of (1FL-3).

Glue this into the frame assembly at the top as shown in picture 6. Attach the vertical strip marked (1FL-5) to the right end and attach the remaining vertical post (1FL-4) to the left, pictures 7 and 8.

Now allow the assembly to dry fully before moving onto the next step.

Tip: When assembling the frame, it is imperative to make sure that the parts fit correctly and are square before the glue has time to set. It is best to assemble the frame piece by piece and clamping it together making sure the parts fit in their allotted slots firmly. Achieving this will make the full completed frame assembly fit together without problems as they will also need to align with the floor parts later in the build.

Take the assembly and the 4 metal circles, picture 9, and place them in the holes on the side of the strips, two either side, and secure them with quick drying glue, picture 10.

Picture 11 shows the completed assembly of the frame. That completes this issue.

Note: The guest bedroom dressing table will be assembled later in this pack when all the parts are available. This makes it easier to assemble and paint in one go.

Assembling the Exterior Wall Frame (First Floor)

Align the slots in strips (2FL-3) and (2FL-6) and fix in place with wood glue. Make sure the vertical strip has the shorter tab at the top. Now attach the other vertical and horizontal strips with the same numbers as shown in picture 2.

Stick the strips (2FL-3) and (2FL-1) together making sure the slots are aligned, picture 3.

Take the previous assembly and glue the tabs of the vertical strip you’ve just glued together as shown in picture 4.

Now take the horizontal strips (2FL-2) and (2FL-3) and join them with wood glue, making sure the (2FL-2) is glued over the top of (2FL-3), picture 5.

Glue this into the frame assembly at the top as shown in picture 6. Attach the vertical strip marked (2FL-5) to the right end and attach the remaining vertical post (2FL-4) to the left, picture 7.

Take the assembly and the 4 metal circles and place them in the holes on the side of the strips, two either side, and secure them with quick drying glue, picture 8.

Prepare 3 pieces of the dowel rod and cut each piece to 8mm. Place each dowel into the holes at the top of the frame as shown in picture 9.

Using wood glue, attach this frame assembly to the ground floor frame assembly making sure the dowel rods align.

You must ensure that the two frames align correctly at the joins, shown in picture 10. This is important as they will not align with the flooring later in the build.

Note: The guest bedroom dressing table will be assembled later in this pack when all the parts are available. This makes it easier to assemble and paint in one go.

Assembling the Exterior Wall Frame (Second Floor)

This stage is exactly the same as the previous two stages, note the parts to this stage all start with the number 3, pictures 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Align the slots in strips (3FL-3) and (3FL-6) and fix in place with wood glue. Make sure the vertical strip has the shorter tab at the top. Now attach the other vertical and horizontal strips with the same numbers.

Stick the strips (3FL-3) and (3FL-1) together making sure the slots are aligned.

Take the previous assembly and glue the tabs of the vertical strip you’ve just glued together.

Now take the horizontal strips (3FL-2) and (3FL-3) and join them with wood glue, making sure the (3FL-2) is glued over the top of (3FL-3).

Glue this into the frame assembly at the top as shown in picture 6. Attach the vertical strip marked (3FL-5) to the right end and attach the remaining vertical post (3FL-4) to the left.

Now allow the assembly to dry fully before moving onto the next step.

Take the assembly and the 4 metal circles and place them in the holes on the side of the strips, two either side, and secure them with quick drying glue.

Prepare 3 pieces of the dowl rod and cut each piece to 8mm. Place each dowl into the holes at the top of the frame as shown in picture 6.

Using wood glue, attach this frame assembly to the first-floor frame assembly making sure the dowl rods align.

You must ensure that the two frame assemblies align correctly at the joins, shown in picture 7. This is important as they will not align with the flooring later in the build.

Note: The guest bedroom dressing table will be assembled later in the next stage.

Issues 72, 73 and 74 parts to the Dressing Table.

Assembling the Guest Bedroom Dressing Table

I’ve purposely left the dressing table until I have all the parts together from the issues above, as painting this in one go is much easier.

Cut the shelves apart with a craft knife and smooth the edges. Applying wood glue attach the two shelves to one of the side panels, picture 1. Then attach the other side panel as shown in picture 2. Place the back panel to the assembly, picture 3, followed by the dressing table top, picture 4. Make sure the white side faces up. Attach the bottom to the underside of the shelf as shown in picture 5.

Cut the legs from their sprue and lightly sand the tops. Place the legs onto the underside of the dressing table assembly, making sure the convex side of the legs face outwards. Take the two mirror frames and attach them together with wood glue making sure the pattern side is facing at the front, picture 6. Once the legs have had time to dry, attach the mirror support as shown in picture 7.

Now it is time to paint the two assemblies white in preparation for the mauve paint, picture 8.

Take the drawer parts and remove the front and back panels from the sprue and sand all the parts smooth. Place the drawer front onto the drawer, making sure the holes to the drawer front are further from the bottom and that the white side faces out. Now attach the back, again with the white side out. Do the same with the other drawer. Once these have had time to dry, paint these white as you did with the dressing table and mirror frame, picture 9.

Now it is time to paint all four assemblies a purple/mauve colour. I used red with a little blue, spot of yellow and a touch of white to achieve the colour shown in picture 10.

Once the paint has had time to thoroughly dry out, place the mirror into the mirror housing. Note, you will need to take off the protective film on the mirror side first. Once put in place, dab a small amount of quick drying glue around the edge to hold it in place.

Attach the mirror and frame to the dressing table by sliding one of the pins into the mirror support making sure the hole in the mirror frame line up and push the pin in until it goes into the mirror frame. You will need a pair of tweezers to push this all the way in. Do the same on the opposite side.

Take the drawer handles and push the two pins into the holes on the drawer. Use a spot of quick drying glue on the inside of the drawer to hold the pins in place.

Finally place the drawers into the dressing table to finish this assembly, picture 11.

Picture 12 shows the dressing table complete with some soft furnishings.

The Ground and First Floor Windows.

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Windows

Take the vertical and horizontal strips, picture 2 and glue them together as shown in picture 3. Make sure the bevelled side of the vertical strips are facing outwards. Once dry, paint the inside of the window frame white. I also spray painted the plastic windows white to take away the plastic look, picture 4.

Apply double sided tape to the edges of the windows. Note the tabs have a bevelled edge. The bevelled edge is the front of the window. You will also notice that the rear of the window has round marks from the manufacturing process, the tape goes this side, picture 5. Take off the protective film on both sides of the plastic glass and stick them to the windows using the double-sided tape.

Place both windows into the frames as shown in picture 6.

Cut out the top strips from the sprue, discarding the centre piece, picture 7 and smooth both strips with sandpaper. Glue the two parts together as shown in picture 8.

The next part of the assembly is quite straight forward. Take one of the two window surrounds and attach with quick drying glue the lower moulding at the bottom of the surround. Note, it is bevelled, so hold it in place until the glue is set. Next attach the cornice at the top in the same way, followed by the windowsill to the lower moulding. Attach the pediment details, again with quick drying glue. The top strips will be glued to the top of the ground floor window. Do the same with the second-floor window, before attaching the window frame assemblies to both the back of the window surrounds, using quick drying glue, pictures 9 and 10.

That complete the assembly for this issue.

The last two pictures show the Moomins house completed so far. Note: the wall frame and windows are temporarily in place. Next pack coming very soon.
