Many thanks Mark, Malc, Glenn and Derek for looking in and leaving such nice comments about my work, always very much appreciated! Cool ThumpUp

@ Mark - Yes, an awful lot of work involved and more than most people actually realise, but I believe it's all about the level of preparation work before the painting stage and also keeping everything sharp at each stage?! Not difficult but so rewarding in the end result!? ThumpUp

@ Glenn - thanks for your vote of confidence regarding a 'Hall of Fame' entry, you're very kind and again, greatly appreciated! ThumpUp

Hello people,

Those older members who know me from previous times will remember that I announced that I was taking a bit of a sabbatical from modelling, after losing my mojo and wishing to spend more time pursuing another of my hobbies, that being fishing.

Well, I am getting older and less able ( or willing!) to spend time out in the cold chasing my elusive quarry. With that said I have decided that it's time for me to finally hang up my fishing rods after a lifetime of fishing and with renewed enthusiasm and a large slice of mojo to finally get back to my modelling bench!

I have made some more progress with this build since I last posted on any of my projects, so watch this space for a forthcoming update on this, and other builds of mine that have been dormant on this forum for way too long, along with some new and exciting ones I'll be starting in the not too distant future!

Looking forward to getting stuck in again!!

Hello all,

So, time to get cracking with the long overdue continuation of this build diary!

I've primed and painted all of the components for the front suspension and brakes, along with some for the rear suspension/brakes whilst I had the airbrush and paints out. Still more parts to come for the rear a little further down the line though. Some of the parts in the photo below are still attached to small sections of sprue, just easier to handle that way when painting/weathering. The throttle/brake pedals have also been done and will be fitted to the interior of the floor pan at the same time as the front suspension/brakes.

Main parts below:

Also painted the main chassis/floorpan, and added some carbon decals to the sides just by the door sills:

It's not needed just yet but I've also painted the rear diffuser and added the carbon decals that are supplied in my aftermarket decal set. The little brown strips on the underside are to represent the wooden skid blocks that are present on the real car:

I've also made a start on building the engine/gearbox assembly and given it a base coat of the correct metallic shade, but more detail painting to come with this and various other parts to add to it, which will probably be the subject of the next update after the front brake/suspension assemblies have been fitted first:

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed!

Hello again Trev, ThumpUp

Thanks for looking in and for your kind comments, greatly appreciated as always!

Looking forward to seeing more of your Tombstone build, one of my favourite build diaries here on the forum, especially as so much of it has been scratchbuilt from wooden coffee stirrers - simply amazing! Will be interested also to see your two ship builds and especially the fully scratchbuilt Mayflower, that will be no mean feat indeed!!

I wish you success with all of your builds Trev and itching to see more from you. ThumpUp

Thanks for looking in and your kind comment Roy, greatly appreciated as always.

As a mad keen Ayrton Senna fan, this was always going to be the first of my incomplete builds that would be finished now that I am posting again. I have others to finish of course, and some new ones to start going forward. Hopefully some of my builds will help to generate some greater interest from other members, since I've noticed that there aren't many non part-work builds on here of late and that a lot of members who used to post builds on here rarely do so nowadays! It would be nice to return to the 'buzzing' forum that it once was a few years ago?

I know you are a mad keen Jaguar fan and I have recently acquired the lovely Tamiya 1:24 Jaguar Mk.II kit along with some exquisitely 3D printed wire wheels which are so thin and more 'in scale' that they will totally transform the finished model. I may put that one up very soon as one of my new builds perhaps?

All the best Roy.

Hello all,

A further update on this build albeit a small one.

I have now fitted all of the front brake/steering parts to the main chassis along with a small bulkhead across the top front edge of the cockpit, a titanium floor pan across the bottom, and added the throttle/brake pedals as well as the two small 'McLaren' logos to the rear edge of the two grey floor carpets:

It seems strange to me that Tamiya have moulded the brake discs as solid discs when I'm certain that they would be 'vented' discs on the real car, but after test fitting one of the wheels it appears that the outer edges of the discs are impossible to see with the wheels on, so maybe that's why they did it that way?

Moving onto the next stage of the engine build in the next update. Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.

Kev.

Hi Kev, BigGrin

This is looking good, ThumpUp ThumpUp

I`ve had a quick search on t`internet and its about 90% sure the discs would have been vented, but at 1:24 and as you say "the edges cannot be seen" would the manufacturer deem it worthwhile. Most probably not.Blink

Keep up the good work, you have my interest for sure.

Very nice work Kev, as always. Love Love

It is pointless in putting more detail into something you won't see. LOL

Thanks for your interest and kind comments Derek and Mark, greatly appreciated as always! ThumpUp

I have now finished all of the work on the parts for the engine/rear chassis assembly and it's ready to be put together, but I am away on holiday at the moment. Will be back next Monday so hopefully will get it all assembled with an update shortly after? Then it's just the interior to be done and this model will finally be ready for inspection!

All the best,

Kev

Oh, the difference between a 'proper' kit and the blob I'm currently on.

Right then, onwards and upwards with more progress made on this build!

The components for this part of the build, namely the engine bay and rear chassis framework, have been painted and detailed ready for assembly:

These parts build into the engine/gearbox assembly, without the chassis framework:

This is the 'plenum chamber' (with some ducting), that is part of the induction/intake system and sits atop the engine. I can't help thinking it looks like a 'Scarab' beetle! Believe it or not, it is only 2cm in length as you can see from the squares on the cutting mat BUT contains no less than 13 individual pieces of carbon decal and took me about two hours to accomplish it!! :

The plenum chamber, cam covers and driveshafts are now attached to the engine/gearbox assembly. The plenum chamber hasn't been permanently fixed yet as I need to remove it at the next step in order to fit more chassis framework around the engine/gearbox assembly:

The rear lower chassis plate and framework along with the lower wishbones is now attached to the engine/gearbox assembly:

The rest of the chassis framework has now been fitted and the plenum chamber permanently fixed. I have also now fitted the gold rear section of the exhaust system. The full size part is covered in heat absorbing gold foil and whilst the model part is not completely accurate in its' finish, it's the best I can achieve and to be honest, VERY little of it will be seen when the bodywork goes on anyway!!:

That's all for this update. Next up will be the rear suspension and brakes along with a couple of floor pans and the diffuser, which I carbon decaled further back in the build diary.

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.

Kev
