The Frame of the Outer Wall (First and Second Floor)

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the First Floor & Second Floor Frame.

Take the parts 4 x 2FB-1 and 2 x 2FB-4 as shown in picture 2. Glue one of the four horizontal strips to the two vertical strips as shown in picture 3. Now glue the other three horizontal strips and glue into position, picture 4. As you can see, I have clamped these in place whilst they dry.

Attach the bottom ends of the vertical strips into the notches of the horizontal strip 2FB-1N, picture 5. Now attach the horizontal strip 2FB-1 to the top as shown in picture 6.

Attach the two vertical end strips, 2FB-3 to the right-hand side and 2FB-2 to the right, picture 7.

Retrieve the ground floor assembly you made in the previous issue, along with this assembly, picture 8. Attach the two assemblies together using wood glue, and clamp the two assemblies together whilst drying, picture 9.

Cut three 10mm pins from the dowl supplied in this issue and using wood glue push them in the three holes where the two assemblies join, picture 10.

Using quick drying glue, push the magnets in place on the side of the assembly, ensuring all six, three each side, are pushed in place firmly, picture 11.

Using a kraft knife, separate the corner pieces and sand smooth. Join the longer piece from the bottom and align it to the front edge. Now attach the shorter piece to the remaining frame edge. Repeat this process to the opposite side, picture 12.

Picture 13 shows the complete assembly for this issue.

The Bay Window and Second Floor Window

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Bay Window

Take the horizontal panel and glue both sides of the tabs and push them into the two side panels as shown in picture 2. Make sure the orientation of the two side panels are positioned correctly and that the hole in the horizontal panel is at the front. Fix the support with wood glue into the hole in the second horizontal panel as shown in picture 3. Now glue the two assemblies together, picture 4.

Glue the roof panel in place, pushing it onto the two tabs as shown in picture 5. Make sure the lines on the panel are facing upwards.

Once this assembly has had time to dry, paint the bottom of the window bay and the inside of the window support white. As you can see in picture 6, I have stippled the bay using a washing up sponge and thick paint. Allow this to thoroughly dry.

Using double sided tape, attach the plastic glass to the window as you have done in previous issues, picture 7.

Separate the roof tiles using a kraft knife. Note the tiles are numbered. Place the first row, numbered one to the bottom edge, using wood glue, and work your way to the top in order 2, 3 etc.

Picture 8 shows the complete assembly of the bay window.

Assembling the Window
Take the vertical and horizontal strips and glue them together as shown in picture 9. Make sure the bevelled side of the vertical strips are facing outwards.

The next part of the assembly is quite straight forward. Take the window surround and attach with quick drying glue the lower moulding at the bottom of the surround. Note, it is bevelled, so hold it in place until the glue is set. Next, attach the cornice at the top in the same way, followed by the windowsill to the lower moulding, picture 10.

Paint the inside of the window frame white. I also spray painted the plastic windows white to take away the plastic look, picture 11.

Apply double sided tape to the edges of the window, picture 12. Note the tabs have a bevelled edge. The bevelled edge is the front of the window. You will also notice that the rear of the window has round marks from the manufacturing process, the tape goes this side, picture 13. Take off the protective film on both sides of the plastic glass and stick them to the windows using the double-sided tape. Place the window into the window frame, also picture 13. Attach the window frame assembly to the back of the window surrounds, using quick drying glue, picture 14.

That completes the assembly for this issue.

The last picture shows the Moomins House build so far.

The Ground Floor Wall frame and Back Porch Steps

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Ground Floor Wall Frame
Using a craft knife, detach the horizontal strips from panel ”A” as shown in picture 2. Use wood glue to fix the two vertical strips 1FD-7 to two horizontal strips 1FD-3, picture 3. Assemble two identical sets, picture 4.

Assemble the remaining frames as before starting with the vertical strip 1FD-1 and attach the two assembled frame you just did. Insert the vertical strips 1FD-6 x 2 and the last horizontal strip from panel “A” 1FD-2. Insert the ends of the vertical strips into the slots of the horizontal strip 1FD-1N. Now attach the two vertical end strips 1FD-4 to the left and 1FD-5 to the right. Clamp all the parts and allow it to dry. Make sure all the parts are square and true in their slots.

Using quick drying glue, attach the magnets, 3 each side, into the holes in the vertical strips.

Picture 5 shows the complete frame.

Assembling the Back Porch Steps
Using a craft knife, detach the parts as shown in picture 6. Paint the parts using a brown paint, picture 7. Note the lower base panel does not need to be painted.

Insert the larger porch element to one of the two larger painted step panels, gluing it in place, then attach it to the unpainted base as shown in picture 8. Now attach the sides to the assembly, gluing them in place, picture 9. Place the other of the two painted panels as shown in picture 10, followed by the front bottom blue panel, picture 11. Finally, attach the top painted step panel, picture 12.

Assembling the Back Porch Roof
Using a craft knife, separate the brackets and glue them in place on the right edge of the roof as shown in picture 13. Note their orientation. Now separate the supports and glue them in place as shown in picture 14. Note the supports are bevelled and match the curvature of the roof edge.
Paint the assembly white as some of the parts have bare wood.

Finally, place the tiles on the roof as you have done in previous issues. You should be a dab hand at this by now.

Picture 15 shows the complete assembly of the steps and roof.

The Second Floor Wall frame

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Assembling the Second Floor Wall Frame

Assemble the second-floor wall frame. This is exactly as you’ve done before.

Take the two vertical strips 2FD-4 and four horizonal strips 2FD-1 and glue in place. Attach the remaining 2FD-1 in place at the top and the strip 2FD-N1 at the bottom with wood glue. Attach the two vertical end strips 2FD-2 to the left and 2FD-3 to the right. Clamp and allow the structure to fully dry, picture 2.

Take the wall frame from issue 83 and secure both frames using clamps. It is very important that the frame is square and not warped, pictures 3 and 4.

Using quick drying glue, fix the remaining magnets into the holes on the side. Finally, attach the four long corner pieces to the outside of the frame as you did on the previous wall assemblies.

Picture 5 shows the complete assembly for this issue.

The Back Door and Ground Floor Window

Picture 1 shows the contents of this issue.

Take the door and paint it with a light brown colour. I also finished mine with a gloss varnish, picture 2. Using quick drying glue place the handles onto the door, around 35mm from the bottom, picture 3.

Assemble the main door frame, making sure that the long tabs of the vertical strips are at the top, picture 4. Now place the two small inner strips in place as shown in picture 4 and place them as shown in picture 5. Take the outer door frame, which will be slightly wider than the inner door frame and attach it to the assembled frame you’ve just made. Glue in place the door cornice to the top of the door using quick drying glue, picture 6.

Now paint the frame using white paint to the unpainted areas.

Take the door and place it into the frame using the pins supplied at the top and bottom of the frame.

That completes the back door, picture 7.

Cut out the top strips from the sprue, discarding the centre piece, picture 8 and smooth both strips with sandpaper. Glue the two parts together as shown in picture 9.

Take the vertical and horizontal strips and glue them together. Make sure the bevelled side of the vertical strips are facing outwards. Once dry, paint the inside of the window frame white. I also spray painted the plastic windows white to take away the plastic look.

Apply double sided tape to the edges of the windows. Note the tabs have a bevelled edge. The bevelled edge is the front of the window. You will also notice that the rear of the window has round marks from the manufacturing process. Take off the protective film on both sides of the plastic glass and stick them to the windows using the double-sided tape.

The next part of the assembly is quite straight forward. Take the window surround and attach with quick drying glue the lower moulding at the bottom of the surround. Note, it is bevelled, so hold it in place until the glue is set. Next attach the cornice at the top in the same way, followed by the windowsill to the lower moulding. Attach the pediment details, again with quick drying glue. Glue the top strip to the top of the window. Attach the window frame assembly to the back of the window surround, using quick drying glue, pictures 10 and 11.

That completes the assembly for this issue.
