You can't really see them when fitted. I'm guessing they are for the overall weight as you say. I'm just completing the Nissan Skyline and that also comes with support blocks.
You could keep them safe somewhere for the future if the car does begin to 'sink'.
I'd advise using them but of course it's up to you.
