I am thinking off doing a scratch build, does anybody know if there are any books that contain plans for scratch built ships of the line.

There are plenty of plans around, just a case of choosing your subject and researching the ship

I already have the book you recomended plus Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern and Planking techniques for Model Ship Builders and i am getting The Art of Rigging.

I decided to build a scratch 1/72 victory along side this one, the reason being if I cant build the parts myself i.e. Figurehead canons photo etched parts etc. etc. I could always buy them from caldercraft.
So do some research into their builds and if you like one inquire if the specially made parts would be available to buy separately.
The book (The 100-gun ship victory) by John McKay has all the plans to build the victory (but it does need photo copying and scaling ) which is the one I`m using along with all the available photo`s on line

The only problem Willz is the Caldercraft Victory is 1/64 scale, so any part would be totaly out of scale for our Victory, hence the reason for the special build requirements we are employing with our enhancements.   MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.

I was never suggesting buying Caldercraft bits for the AL Victory, I was actually suggesting to Brian who is looking to do a scratch build to look through Caldercraft`s range of model ships, and if he likes one and he can obtain the drawings in the same scale as the Caldercraft then he would be able to buy Caldercrafts wonderful bits (photo etched parts etc. etc.). ( I hope all the members that bought a set put an extra few quid in for you trouble.), and to end, I am building a scratch Victory at 1/72 and I am certain that the scale of the Caldercraft Victory is 1/72 otherwise I've got a lot of bits and pieces for the bonfire Willz

Hi Willz! The Caldercraft Victory is 1/72 as is the fittings for the Victory so you won't have a lot of bits and pieces for the bonfire. Other fitting in the Caldercraft range are 1/64 so check the scale before you buy.

G'Day Brian ...My first attempt was a small model and I took the easy path and purchased a set of plans from CMB it had a full parts list with it even giving Part Numbers...I really enjoyed this build and learnt loads about model making and this type of build also a little about myself.
