 Thinking of getting 1 of these but was wondering if anyone has used this type of bender before and if its worth getting, or should i just stick with the plank benders provided with the tool kits from here. I have always relied on the old tried and tested, soak and bend system for my planks, but I would be very interested in what input arises from your question, as I am thinking of getting a plank bender myself...

Hi Andy, I always bend my planks like Jonny, naturally it takes longer but the wood is not forced into shape. I use 2 plasic cups together to bend ply pieces,in fact bottles can be used and lots of different items to help bend timber. I soak the item in hot water for 20 mins, then fit it wet to the model to form its shape overnight,then fit it permanently. Have alook at my Endeavour longboat build you will see what I mean   MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.

Hi Jonny and MWG Thanks for the replies and yes iv looked at both of your methods to bend planks and eack work well, im just looking 4 a bender that lets say does the job each time every time with the above bender you just soak the wood well and bend. Im not impressed with the electric type benders as cooking wood in my opinion never does it any good, i know that in full size ship building they would steam planks before fitting but thats totaly diffrent to the electric types on the market.The reason im asking is my next build will be a  brig type ship and i think i will need a good way to bend planks to compleat it, will be starting the diary tomorow hopefully  Regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Very true MWG and your coments /advice is always apreciated, i was just asking about coments on the above mentioned tool by anyone who has used it or knows of it and wether its worth buying or not regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

It allows you to create an internal bend without marking, but it takes some getting used to and the wood needs be wet for the best results, some like it other's think its useless.
Some use a heat gun as an alternative to an electric bender which applies hot air rather than contact heat.
Amati also do a nice nipper bender which can also be used to form shapes in metal strip

Hi All,
I have one of these benders.
I used it for creating the initial bend on the bow planks on Victory, but still had to then bend around the bow to produce the correct form, getting the initial bend did help a little, but I wouldn't recommend the tool.
You do have to soak the plank first & it can be quite difficult to get the planks to run through both the rollers, still had breakages & it does leave marks on the inside of the bend.
A bit bit of a novelty item I feel.

I decided in the end to buy the above bender and have found it quite easy to use. You must soak the planks for at least half an hour and it performs quite well [ although it sometimes crushes the end of the wood 1 plank in 7] it wont be for everyone as people have said above but im into gadgets and this appealed to me at the time. I would give it an 8 out of 10 rating as it sometime crushes the ends of the planks regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
