Hi & welcome. One obvious problem that many of us had was the infamous frame 15 ,check out all the build diaries from the early parts of the build & you will see some of the ways people got over it,of course you may be one of the lucky ones that doesn't have the problem. Hi Phil
Yes, there are one or two just to keep you on your toes.
Main thing for me is don't skimp on the fairing. Test, rub down, test, rub down until it's perfect from every angle. It'll make planking a joy (perhaps).
I would suggest you take an hour or so to go through here in detail - Victory for Son of Bulwark
plus all the model discussion threads. Build discussions on HMS Victory
It's a lot of work here but will save you many days of wasted effort in the long run.
John

Hi and welcome, one of the first things you will tackle is one of the ships boats. consider splitting the planks length ways it will be easier to form the hull. also the anchor shape is incorrect see 'perfecting the anchor' in the build discussion area there is also one on the barrels that need some improvement. good luck looking forward to seeing your progress. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Hi all,not having a great deal of success with the Victory at the mo,i've had to reorder it as they had lost the first one, second one i had to send the confirmation of my order to Cus Care as they couldn't find it on the system & it was supposed to have a ref No beginning with W,and it hadn't got this on it,just cannot believe the bad luck im having with both the Surprise & Victory, hope it gets sorted soon.Phil

builderphil wrote:Hi all, have just subscribed to the Victory, any little pitfalls i should look for?also in the middle of building Yamato & Hood.Bye for now.Phil Hi and welcome, One or two tips that I wish that I had known at the beginning of my build. Right from the start of your build ensure that the keel (backbone) is straight and square to your jig and double check that it does not start to develop a twist at either the bow or stern as any twist however slight will give problems later in the build. There is plenty of info regarding building the jig in the forum. When fitting the decks ensure they are level from side to side and then the hull planking will line up nicely on each side. Note that the decks have a slight curve from bow to stern. Pay particular attention to the overall width along the length of the hull measuring accurately from the centre line to both the inside and outside of the frames making sure that both sides mirror each other. This will ensure that the deck planking will look even when you reach that stage of the build and eliminate any oversize gaps between deck and the hull. If you are going to feature the cut-out hull section I would advise that you fit the planks as if you were not doing the cut-out and then remove the surplus planking every 2/3 rows. This will ensure that the planks follow the correct line along the length of the hull. Finally ensure that you taper the edges of the planks enough so that they sit nice and smoothly without excessive stepping. If in any doubt ask the question, there are plenty of members here who are only too willing to help a fellow builder. Enjoy your build, its great fun, stressful and will be a source of satisfaction for many a long year.
