The very idea of having a big, heavy, cumbersome bomb on the Zero was an anathema to the Japanese Navy Air Force, and it was only the desperation of the last years of the War that forced them to adopt 'Kamikaze' missions. To meet this aim a special 250kg bomb rack was designed and retrofitted to the Zero.

The photo below is believed to be of the first Kamikaze Special Attack of the 201st Kokutai taking off from the Mabaracat air base in the Philippines on 25th October 1944.
The aircraft is carrying a 250kg kamikazi bomb and was flown by Lt Yukio Seki, escorted by two Zero's for the duration of the misson.
On this occasion the mission was purely voluntary, but later, pilots were ordered to carry out Kamikaze missions.
