Plank bending pliers put indentations or notches into the plank surface which allows the plank to bend, (the notched side is the inside surface).

If I recall rightly, the blade of your tool kit bender is reversible, in that one side of its blade has a blunt edge used for bending, and opposite side is a cutting edge.
If its the first time you have used one, gently squeeze the handles, over squeezing may snap the wood completely or the handle of the tool.

Depending on how tight a bend needs to be made, the plank can also be soaked in warm water or steamed, you might also want to consider an electric plank bender.

Have a play with the bending pliers using some scrap wood strip, this thread might also be useful

The closer you place the grooves to each other the tighter the curve, also if you place the benders at an angle to the wood (not 90deg which is used normally)I found that you could introduce a twist to the plank as well, you can overlay the 90degree marks if you are careful.Use an offcut of plank to test which way you need to angle pliers to get the twist you want.
I also use electric benders & they are far better in my opinion but the pliers do have their place in the grand scheme of things.

A cheaper option, instead of getting the plank bender from various supliers is a cheap slodering iron. Soak the planks in boiling water for around 20 mins or so then use the soldering it=ein to ben the plank in to shape.

Hope nthis helps.
