I decided to check my subscription yesterday and low and behoold it states that issues 1&2 where despatched on the 6th so I am now waiting impatiently for them to arrive. I cannot wait to get my hands on them and examine the parts and magazine. Having the parts in my hand will actually help me to come to terms of how big this model will actually be. Looking at images on the web just doesn't cut it. As this is my 1st ever boat build I am really looking forward to it. I know it's going to take a long time to complete, which is a good thing for me considering how long it has been since I built any type of model. It will also give me the time to gather together all the appropriate tools that I will require for this and hopefully other builds.

Can anybody give me any recommendations as to what important tools I would require? Also which glue is the best to buy for this build???

I will of course be starting my own personnel build log for this with loads and loads of pictures BigGrin. My biggest worry with this build I think I will have will be the problem with rib 15 and planking the hull. I am trying to research the rib problem as much as I can to see what is involved and to find the simplest solution but I havn't been able to find what I am looking for at present. Guess i must be looking in the wrong place Confused

BigGrin Hi Andy,

If you go to the search function at the top of the forum page, click on it, then select 'Ship Modeller' in the forum selection menu, then enter the words 'Rib 15' in the 'posts' window and click search, you should get about 20 pages come up on the subject !! Best way to sift through them is to start at the LAST page (page 20 - oldest entries) and work your way back as I think this rib problem was brought up in the early days of the build, so no point starting at the most recent entries (page 1), if you understand what I mean ??

Hope that helps ?? BigGrin

hi kev. I have tried using the search function and yea it is helpful even though it gives you a lot to search through lol. plenty of reading for me it seems lol. the other thing I have a problem with is the terminology used in boat building. guess it just takes time i guess lol

Hi,

The rib problem is not as big as it has been made out to be you simply need to build up the rib and the mag instructs you how to do that. your probably best going through the build diaries see how people dealt with it.

As for tools. other than what you get in the tool set you will need some good small drill bits, a pin vice, steel rule with 1/2mm on modeling tape for masking, good set of files and sand paper of different grades and clamps.

For the planking there was a number of solutions but i found a soldering iron great for bending the planks.

are you painting or staining?

Hi Andy welcome to the Forum,BigGrin If you do as Jase suggests you will not go far wrong,go over and over the build logs including the Official build by Mr T, you will find a wealth of information between the threads, when we started we did not have this library of info, you at least have a head start

Best of luck with your build BigGrin Mike

Thanks for the replies guys. I will indeed be going over the build logs which I am finding very helpful indeed.

Jase, I will be painting the model as I think it looks a lot better. Woould you recommend brushing or spraying for the paint work??

Welcome to the build, Like Mike says you have a great start with the amount of information we have all shared on here, the only problem I find is that I spend more time reading post then actually building ! LOL

BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin Got my 1st 2 issues yesterday. Had to go collect them from the local depot though as they came whilst I was out. At least the post man didn't just leave them on the door step, thank god.

Now I just need to collect more issues before I make a start, and build my dry dock and gather some tools together. Can't wait. The misses thinks I'm a big kid a xmas, but I don't care. I love feeling this way Laugh Laugh Laugh

Hi Andy! Cool

Your misses is right, we are all like BIG KIDS! when we get our next issues.LOL

It's a good idea to make your building jig while you wait to start the build, it fills in the time and then you can drool over the keyboard as you look at the tools you would like to buy on the internet!

Are you planning to make a build diary?, because we all like to see each other’s work so we can give advice when needed to help you.

I hope you enjoy your build when you start it.

Hi Darron

Yes I am planning on creating a build dairy. I will be calling on all you experts for top tips and advice as I go along. My biggest problem I am finding is every time I look at tools, I just want them. Whether I need them or not lol.

Hi Andy, ive got sanding blocks, brackets to make a rig for this boat(not built yet) dremel 300, assorted clamps, cutting knifes wood glue etc, plank blending tool and many more, If u look at the main DeAgostini website for the info on the Ships it will list the tools required

This one is for the HMS Surprise

I always prefer to purchase tools from ebay because of the options and price you can get
