Hey all, done some plastic and matchstick models before, thought i'd have a bash at some wooden partworks so having a go at the Akagi and Yamato to start with. First parts have arrived so just about ready to get stuck in.This forum really is a fountain of knowlegde, theres some real quality work going on out there, time will tell if mine will compare :) A few quick questions before I start off, if you would like to share some more... What colour red does tomick use for bellow the waterline? Priming metal parts... What do you use? standard model paint? a Specialist model primer? or will the sort of spray stuff they sell in halfords do and not cover any detail? And finally, the instructions recommend polishing all metal parts... does everybody do this religiously? Would 600grit be ok? It says 800 in the instructions but i only have 600, then 1200 to hand. Cheers guys, hope to share in some of the stories in the future :) Current Builds: DeAgostini Akagi DeAgostini Yamato

Hi Dragonbones And welcome to the Forum you will get lots of input from looking at other peoples build diarys. The red tomic is using and myself is tamiya colours XF-9 hull red and the grey is XF-75 ijn [kure arsenal],any good brand of spray undercoat will do, if you already have a favorite use that.I wouldnt recomend using the tamiya stuff[it dries white after going on clear] as when i used it it turned into a lumpy white powder under the top coat so i had shedding problems over several weeks afterwards[perhaps i did something wrong but that was my experience with it ]. As for the polishing of the metal parts you can get it to a mirror like polished surface if you wish but what you really need to do is remove any surface oxidization and get a good key on the metal so the paint adheres your grades should be ok but go lightly with the 600 grit. I generaly use the file that is privided but also use a set of neadle files and a set of riffler files for the more inaccesable places, also there will be small burrs/flash [part of the casting process]on the metal parts these will all have to be removed [some parts are very small believe me, take a pic with a digi cam if u can and you will see if anthing sticks out like saw thumb] if a clean looking model is desired. Some parts come semi assembled [ like the paravanes] i personaly strip them down to there individual pieces so i can remove said burrs but thats up to you if your so inclined. Hope this helps Regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks Andy. Thats a good idea, stripping down the paravanes would make them easier to paint in fine detail. I'll be using sprays so TS-33 and TS-66... I think. They come in 100ml cans, will that be enough 1 per ship? I was looking at using Tamiya grey surface primer,it seems popular and looking at some reviews I haven't seen anyone else having problems with it, so i might give it a bash and see how it goes... you can tell me i told you so if it all goes tits up Does anybody else have experience or an opinion on this? hi,I'm doing the akagi, and hood, and am just getting round to painting some bits.I'm using brush paint for the metal parts, less messy for me,and use admiral metal primer acrilic paint.havn't got round to hull colours yet but I would follow the holy ones(tomick)paint choice.and of course arp's choice. Hi Dragonbones the tamia grey spray should be fine to use you might need at least 2 per model as there are lots of parts to paint. I generaly hand paint but i am ussing sprays for the hull. The tamia paint i had problems with is the X21 flat base having been told in the model shop by a spotty youth it was good regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
