Hello there,

And welcome to the start of my build diary of what is sure to be a very exciting project. The said project being the R/C Supermarine Spitfire by DeAgostini. Drool

As with all my builds any comments, suggestions and constructive criticism gratefully received as always. BigGrin I hope your going to enjoy the journey as much as I am. BigGrin

This next photo shows the amount of parts there are, and the sheer scale of the task ahead, (don't be fooled by the picture this a very deep box and what your seeing here is just the surface). Also there are many other secondary tasks attached to the build and some issues and pending upgrades which greatly increase its size and scope. I will cover these in detail later.

Here are some background facts for the greatest fighter that Britain has ever produced which will serve as an introduction:-

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries throughout the Second World War. The Spitfire continued to be used as a front line fighter and in secondary roles into the 1950s. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only British fighter in production throughout the war.

The Spitfire was designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works (since 1928 a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong). Mitchell continued to refine the design until his death from cancer in 1937, whereupon his colleague Joseph Smith became chief designer. The Spitfire's elliptical wing had a thin cross-section, allowing a higher top speed than several contemporary fighters, including the Hawker Hurricane.Speed was seen as essential to carry out the mission of home defence against enemy bombers.
During the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire was perceived by the public as the RAF fighter of the battle, though the more numerous Hawker Hurricane shouldered a greater proportion of the burden against the Luftwaffe. The Spitfire units had a lower attrition rate and a higher victory to loss ratio than those flying Hurricanes.

After the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command, and saw action in the European, Mediterranean, Pacific and the South-East Asian theatres. Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire served in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, carrier-based fighter, and trainer. It was built in many variants, using several wing configurations.Although the original airframe was designed to be powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine producing 1,030 hp (768 kW), it was adaptable enough to use increasingly more powerful Merlin and the later Rolls-Royce Griffon engines; the latter was eventually able to produce 2,035 hp (1,520 kW).

You might be interested to know that the code markings of this model AZ-G, represent Spitfire Mk.VB s/n BL924G of No.234 Squadron, Coltishall, April 1942, known as 'AZ-Valdemar Atterdag' and was flown by Axel Svendsen.
It was shot down by an FW190 over Berck-Sur-Mer France, April 24, 1942 and Svendsen was killed.

'Valdemar Atterdag' was a Danish King from 1340 to 1375 and is credited with reuniting Denmark, Atterdag was his nickname which translated means “day again”.

If you want to see a full sized replica of AZ-G, Svendsen’s family donated a replica of the aircraft to the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, West Sussex.

The R/C Spitfire was around in 2005, you might be lucky enough to find a full set via eBay, though its not a model for the novice flyer

Hi guys its nice to know that this model evokes so many nice memories for you all. It now seems we have scrambled the A-Team [No pun intended Mr T Laugh ] and now we can begin with the project. I'm starting to get a real community build feeling towards this, which is what I always wanted it to be right from the start.

Please feel free to jump in at any point, because I would appreciate and desire any help from you all. That goes for all the rest of you guys as well, just jump in and lets have some fun with this! BigGrin Cool

Oh! A big thank as well you goes to Mr T for the information regarding the call sign for this Spitfire, I was wondering about that and you've answered my questions regarding that, and for also the picture of the model you built yourself. It was very interesting information thank you! BigGrin

Also thanks to Karl for evoking the memory of those long lazy summer days in the 80's at the flying field. God I miss em! Cool

I do have one question Mr T. As this is a DeAgostini work, am I allowed to produce pictures and text from the magazines in my diary or not?

Should be fine as long as its relevant to what you are posting.

Have you built/flown an R/C aircraft before?

thanks for putting this item up,and thanks to mr.t. for his contribution already and I'm sure of much much more to come,as he has asked, have you flown r/c air craft before?this fact is very important, because it will affect the advice that may be asked for or given.but whether or not you have flown r/c.the building still has to be done, accurate and straight is the rule here.NO warps allowed, and no sloppiness in the control rods.if you can make jigs for the fuselage do so.your build is getting me going here,it's making me fingers itch, and memories of the smell of dope and thinners.can't wait for this to get underway.very good luck on this one. any chance you can spread out the parts for a look at what fuel tanks/capacity,engine mounts etc.????and what engine are you going to use.?

BigGrin Looks the biz and karl is right this will not be a novice flyers aircraft, i remember my 60 inch wing span fw 190 being a terror to fly it was the japanese marakita [ i think thats right] kit with the spun ali cowl.As people have already said a striaght board is esential for the wing construction and also if bell cranks are used to conect the flying surfaces these can induce a lot of slop to the controls if not set up corectly, good luck with the build and looking forward to your diary
regards
Andy

Dear members,

PACK 1 CONSTRUCTION PART 1

Pack 1 consists of:

1. Bulkhead (1)
2. Fuselage front - right side
3. Fuselage front - base
4. Propeller
5. Spinner
6. Spinner disk
7. Stickers for the propeller

Construction is dry fit for the moment, the actual gluing will take place in pack 2. Everything was straight forward, although there were some issues even at this stage.

I purchased this kit complete in one go and there was a very slight warping on the fuselage front - right side, and the small foot which is used for keeping the piece aligned during assembly had broken off which I only discovered when I took the parts out of the packaging.

The broken foot was a minor inconvenience however, I simply stuck it together with the last of my super glue. Talking about my super-glue I also discovered that my glue was past its sell by date and had solidified inside the plastic tube. I wasn't aware super glue actually did that, but there you go. Laugh

The warping issue could be a problem (it usually is), although it is very slight. I may be able to get away with it, but I shall have a clearer idea when I fit the fuselage front left side. If not then I will have to straighten it.

I have just checked the foot and it has adhered well. It appears the Cyanoacrilate (Super-glues' real name, as 'Super-Glue' is actually a brand name, I believe its called 'Crazy-Glue' in America. correct me if I'm wrong?) has worked.

Regards

BigGrin
