just an idea to give the gunport lids a bit of support when fitting, you can drill a hole at the rear and fit a headless nail, or small piece of brass wire, then drill a hole in the hull for the nail to fit into. it hepls stop them breaking off too easily. Come on you Jimmies

I can confirm that this approach works, I have done this procedure with the first lot of gunport lids that will be obscured by the channels.
As has been suggested a small hole drilled in the end of the lid and a cut off pin inserted with the point sticking out!, this negates the need to drill a second hole to accept the pin. Line up the lid with the edges of the gunport and carefully manouvre the lid up from that point and then gently push the lid in towards the final possition, pull the lid away and either the the pin will stay pinned to the hull or will remain attached to the lid. It is just a matter of deciding if the lid is in an acceptable possition or readjusting the lid to suit, when the final possition has ben decided on, a small drop of super glue on the pin and a drop at each end holds everything in place Securely.

I would just like tp add a slightly different method which I used,as the hinges supplied are oversized,they very neatly slot into the top of the gunports.I slotted my lids into the gap between the gunport liner and porthole,that way you can adjust the angle you want the the gunport to be. just check my build and have a look. another good idea karl i thought about bending them up and having the ends showing above the gun ports, but didn't like the look, and some of the wiggles got in the way. i have also drilled all the hinges and fitted nails through all the hinge holes, it takes ages as i have to fit the nail first then clip off the point and then file them flat, and finally give it another coat of stain, but it's one of those jobs you can do at night while watching the telly. the finshed look is quite good, i'll put some pics up on my diary once i finish the shrouds. on another point, i got some injections on monday and have stsrted to get a little bit of feeling back in my hand again so fingers crossed  things should get easier from now on. just a heads up for anyone getting to this stage. having fitted all the lids using a pin, so they were all secure, i still managed to dislodge a couple while rigging the shrouds, ratlines, stays etc, if i was doing this or a similar build again, then i would fit the lids around the same time as fitting the dummy guns to stop any damage, anyone coppering the hull as an afterthought should really copper before fitting the lids. it may just be my clumsiness, as my hands don't always do as my brain says, but i do think fitting them as late as possible will help stop any accidentily being knocked off.
