Thanks so much Gents. Your encouragement really turned this into a learning opportunity! I used a laser level to ensure the markings on both sides op the ship are exactly equal and sanded the filled-up parts back down: Port side:   Completed the lining of the gap in the quarterdeck and started on the companionways

Thanks Jase & Jonny Got the companionways constructed and ready for varnishing On the closeup shot they look a lot more skew than what they are (I'm still considering breaking the 3 skew ones up and scratch building them)  I fitted pins to the underside of each pillar to locate and secure them better to the deck under the quarterdeck.  Pillars fitted  Skid-beams glued to the correct length, ready for painting

Thanks Hans, John & Mike! Re-looking at the instructions (as one sometimes does after the work is done ) I noticed that the ends of the skid-beams should have been rounded. Now they are. I won't bore you with pic's of the paint drying. SWAMBO is away this weekend so it's just me and the boys - don't know if any work on the Victory will get done.

Surprisingly, I managed to get quite a bit of work done over the weekend: Fitted the skid-beams and the companionways:  The poop deck varnished and the bulwarks painted  All the capping done  Confusion:  1. Why glue in a little plank at the ends of the fore-castle? Wouldn't it have made more sense to just leave the plank longer when the hull was originally planked? 2. Why the instructions to cut the support ribs to 3mm, and then cut them again to get the taper to 1.5mm at frame 7? And with that issue 60 is complete. I can't believe I'm halfway through the build!

Thanks Steve. My book finally arrived yesterday - now the challenge is whether I do a bit of reading or spend time building...  Building the Fighting top:  I'm cutting the ribs slightly longer than what is needed and them gluing them - I get a much cleaner line and a more accurate angle if I cut them exactly to the size of the inner opening once the glue is dry.

Very neat work with the tops.
Yes, I found it better to leave the strips slightly longer than needed, but in my case it is a simple fact that I make too many mistakes and prefer to take a little off rather than have to redo or add to.

Must say I am using masking tape (3mm) for the bindings and it's working out great especially after painting.
The idea cam from another member here.

Here is another example! To avoid having to move the third heart block up over the bands on the main mast (the plan shows the third heart block at 195mm above the deck with two bands above it). In issue 100 step 1 we are told:- Quote:Before fitting the sail, ensure that the third heart block on the main mast is as close below the stay as possible. If you need to slide it up the mast, it can be 'walked' up and over the bands by pushing up one side, then the other, and repeating this until the block is in its correct position. I had a right job doing that the heart block was fitted tight to the mast. So fit this block between the top band and the hounds leaving enough room for the 0.5mm mizzen topmast stay that goes just below the hounds and make sure all the heart blocks are set 10mm - 12mm away from the masts, but no more than 12mm from the masts or you will need to redo them to rig the ship correctly, the plan shows them at 12mm from the mast. Finished the Fighting top last night:  Also measured and cut the rubbing paunch (185mm strip that fits over the bindings) only to find that the slots do not line up with the thread positions!  Checking the plans it turns out that the 2 mast plans do not match!  HINT: After you've done the bindings, use them (or the bottom plan on the pic) to mark and cut the slots (the knife worked very well for me)
