Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I have posted to a forum like this! And the first time I have made a wooden model Unsure

I have been building plastic models for about 15 years now(not bad to say im only 22!). My Grandad was the person who got me into scale modeling with a skill level 1 Red Arrow. He always wanted to build wooden models but always said he didnt couldn't find the time, even after he retired. When he died a few Years ago, I said that I would build a wooden model in his memory. I suppose this is something to keep me going when the times get rough (which they inevitably will!). He also always wanted to build a model of the Victory, so this build means alot to me.

I'm waiting on issues 1 and 2 to arive with my binder at the minute, but I've done a little research on this forum and am now really looking forward to my build (when the parts arrive).

I'm definatly going to paint the model, and may copper plate below the water line. But we will see how the build goes first!!

I'll post some pictures when the parts have arrived and I have made some progress.

One quick question though. I know I wont need to know for a while but what is the problem with rib 15? Is the part too low on the keel or too high? Or am i just confused? (wouldn't be the first timeLOL)

hi doctor and welcome to the forum. i am sure you will enjoy building victory, it was my first wood model for a long time, but the mags take you along step by step, and any other info you need will be here somewhere, just ask if you have any problems that are not covered and someone will help.

as far as rib 15 goes, i never knew there was a problem until i joined the forum, but no doubt you'll get an answer soon.
Come on you Jimmies

Some builders found that frame 15 required adjustment and others not, here is what some builders did to resolve and the reason for doing so..

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick status update.
Because I'm a complete idiot, I ordered the magazine the day AFTER the previous issues were dispatched Cursing.

This means that I have had to wait 6 WEEKS for my first two issues. But I suppose the anticipation will help when I start to build.

The issues have been dispatched so I should get them soon.

More to follow....

hi doc. the delivery date is only a guide,I have found that it is approx. 2 weeks after the delivery date that it actually arrives, you most need patience for building, the skill comes later, and a lot of patience with deag, they are the only internet based company I know who take at least 6 weeks to deliver a pot of paint,so be warned!there is a lot of help at hand, most important is tomicks official build,if you follow that you won't go far wrong, have fun and see you soon.BigGrin

And finally, after 6 weeks of waiting, my parts have arrivedBigGrin.

The first thing I thought was " oh my GOD its bigger than I thought" but Drool

I've made the decision to paint now. After reading the magazine I thought the painted version would be better for me as I will inevitably make mistakes that the paint will cover up, and in my opinion, she look better this way. It kind of looks like Victory has her war-paint on ready for battle. A bee ready to sting.

The parts so far have gone together without any real problems. At the minute, I have only done the fiddley job, like the 12-pounder(literally the smallest thing I have ever made!) and the anchor.

I've chosen not use the thin thread that comes with the anchor to hold the two stocks together. Instead, I used some cheap thread for my local shop (where I work!)It may not be historically accurate but in my opinion it kind of looks a little stronger.

Hope you enjoy the build! It's good to see another younger builder here (I am 23). There is a wealth of information on this forum and everyone is incredibly helpful.
All the best with your Victory model,

BigGrin Welcome to the forum Doctor
Looks good so far and just a word on what you have done so far, if it looks right to you then do it[ ie the cord you used] its your model, also as you progress through the build the opportunity to make changes as others have will become an option so several choices will become obvious to you.Good luck with your build and il look forward to your diary updates

So after a very long shift at work (13.5 hours!!!) I decided to relax and complete ribs 13 and 14 and start the bow former.

To make sure the ribs stayed flat, I glued them together and then put them both on an old LOTR battlegames rule book with another one on the top along with my money box(with very little in itBigGrin) and some other heavy stuff to make sure they were flat.

The bow former was kept at a right angle to the rib using a CD cover and constant checking, not that the checking was really needed but better to be safe than sorry.

And this is the build so far.

The ribs and the bow former are only dry fitted, but its nice to see some aspects of the ship coming together! Also, in the bottom right hand corner of a couple of these pictures is my mantra for the build "Keep calm and carry on!

One quick word though, the camera I'm using is on my rubbish iPhone 3. I should be getting the iPhone 4s soon so the quality of my pics should get better by the time the nex issues arrive.

Hi Doc1805,
At your stage it is so important to keep all former's straight if not it can make things very difficult at a later stage.
good luck with your build, and take your time.

Regards tf64.

Hi just a tip, please dry fit all the pieces until you have all the Hull rib parts, then stick everything together and on a Dry Dock board fixing the keel in brackets this way the whole Hull will stay straight and trueBigGrin I hope you do not mind me mentioning this?BigGrin Regards Mike

Welcome aboard thedoctor1805, you are in the the right place for the best advise money can buy. These guys know what it is all about. The tip Mike gave you is critical to keep her keel straight ansd true and will save you a lot of grief later on. Take your time and keep going. The motto on your workspace says it all.

Many thanks Mike and tf64.

With regards to the keel, I've got a piece of wood shelving from my grandmas as well as some small brackets to hold the keel straight.

Whats the best way to build the keel when I have all the parts?

On other websites (mainly one about the Titanic), builders build the parts for the keel on a flat worktop and put the joint braces on one side then use their jig to put the the braces on the other side and keep the keel straight?Confused
