Actually, the clear coat note on the Jap web site is referring to a gloss clear coat over the decals, and recommends an Aqueous (acrylic) type..

Tamiya x-22 clear coat is acrylic........if they say its ok to seal in the decals with, then its ok to use on the existing surface!

ANY USE of abrasive paper is NOT recommended on any parts... i'm not going to get into an argument here but either Tomicks suggestion of an acrylic tamiya spray or Halfords Clear Lacquer which is also Acrylic will do the job 100% if applied correctly!!!
You have been warned... no not used any type of abrasive paper or cloth!!!

If any of you are that worried then send me the bloody things and i'll do them!!!!

i was trying to refer to the point that acrylic is fine to use on the model as enamel reacts badly to an existing surface.........and i would further like to add why it is suggested, not by you, not to key the surface? have i missed something crucial here? as i have done this which every model i have built! , i am sorry if i am appearing to sound off, which i certainly am not, just looking for answers like everyone else, putting in my 2 cents like everyone else, if its right or wrong (we all do things differently)....with mixed results...lol.....which is what this forum is all about!!.....i am babbling now.....sorry :-)

Dave.. no need to appologise ok!

What i'm pretty sure you understand is that there are a lot of people on here with varying degrees of skill and for some this is the very first "Kit" they have ever built... Also a lot of money spent for their first delve into this hobby so to ask them to get hold of a can of spray is pretty daunting for most.. This thread is very important to just about everyone on here as you can probably tell and has created quite a heated debate on the colour change..(how it went from colour change to "gloss" I don't know!!) Tomick is doing his best to referee in both corners by trying not to show sides(apart from ours)and is doing a sterling job too may I add..

Your advice is valuable to us all as is everyone elses but your posts did come over a little confusing.. Posts have been made about which course of action to take with the "gloss" finish but which course people take is down to them.. they can wait it out and hopefully Deag/Kyosho will come up with an answer or they can become the aspiring modellers the've always wanted to be and give the clear finish a go...

Thank you for that, i must admit i know what i want my posts to say, but can read a little differently sometimes! I would like to say though, as i have only been building static/rc models for 20 years now, in my experience, the key to a deep colour glossy finish is regardless to the 2 or 3 coats of finisher/colour that is applied, the key to a deep glossy finish is at least 3 coats of clear colour/lacquer........ finished with a fine cutting agent.....it takes forever, but......boy!! the results !! :-)

I understand what you are all saying about the finish and the best way to go about acheiving it and it is appreciated cause i have never done this before but aint the point here that Deag should sort this. We have been supplied with inferior parts that have either the incorrect colour or finish. We will be paying £600+ for this model and should expect and demand the correct parts. It is afterall supposed to be a fully licensed product and i am sure McClaren would not put a car on track with the wrong colour scheme. Admin has said they are talking to supplier so lets wait and see but we do need an answer very soon.

As per FIRST POST to start this off CAN I HAVE A ONE COLOUR CARCursing

I don't want to sand it, go to Halfords, buy a spray gun or speak to Tamya....all I want is a one colour / finish car as advertised.

Thankyou for the advise from the professionals, but mine is....unpack the bag and either screw it or glue it....end of !!

Nearly 10,000 views...how many would be purchasers are reading this and thinking, maybe not after all ??

I agree DeAg should sort this properly, but when I sent for the replacement parts there was no prob and they arrived a week later, FOC, no questions asked.....
(still the wrong colour though...)
Having said that, I just looked closely at the side pod colour compared to my newly-clear coated front wing.
Unless I got different parts to everyone else, I'd say the wing colours are SPOT ON!
True, they are a satin finish, but the colour is perfect.
The side pod has a yukky salmon-pink tint!
It's the SIDE PODS that look wrong to me!!!
I'd rather have a kit the colour of the wings, than replacement wings that are PINK!

Ka Ching!!!!

Been keeping my lips pretty much sealed on this but Roy is right.. the wings are correct apart from the matt finish but the process of how they are powder coated is different in that the wing colour is applied over a "white" base where as the red on the pods has been applied over the original "silver" base colour. So this will make the pod colour incorrect. If you was to spray your car red then you would'nt do it over a black base for instance..

Have just looked at the front cover picture on the mag to issue 44, side colour finish same as front and rear - i.e matt.

At least I can get the last wheel/tyre done as latest batch just arrived.

Ive clear coated my spares that I had with 2 makes of clear coat and both times the finish is the same, Ive used Halford and Tamiya the colour when painted is still not matching the side pods. Huh

Oh Put about 4 coats on too.

Just a quick further update on my replacement parts.
When I ordered the nose parts, I only requested issues 1, 2, 3 & 5.
These arrived in around a week, FOC.
Somehow I failed to notice you also need issues 6 & 7.
I just called customer services, had to wait around 20 seconds, spoke to a very polite and helpful lady.
The parts are being sent out express (whatever that means) and once again, FOC.
I have to say that so far, I'm VERY impressed with customer service.
I've given my new parts 2 coats of Halfords clear lacquer and they look like wet glass.
It's actually the side pods I'm least impressed with colour-wise.
They're PINK!
Also, have a look at the number '22' on the nose...... It's also the wrong colour!!!
I'm tempted to see how many 'other' parts are needed for the red bits on the body, and perhaps order those, and experiment with re-painting them to match the wings if DeAg can't sort the colour problem.
Roy.
