Hello shipmates,

around issue #60 the magazine is asking to make a choice between running or Standing rigging on the victory. I was wondering if its possible to try a third alternative with shortened sails (hope this is the right expression).

I mean this: (Image)

By this the ship would have some sails, the whole rigging will still be visible and one won't have the sometimes unnatural look of some sails.

Is anybody doing this?

Cheers, Timm

I would love to do this but have no idea on how to achieve such a look.
My guese is that the sails would have to be modified to reduce the amount of material in order that they would not look to bulky.
Now on issue 76 and have rigged the masts as per the full sail version but still looking at the possbility of furled sails. I hope someone out there has the answer.
Happy building to you all.

Hi
been following this thread and wanted to reply but not been able to find some info here, still unpacking after moving.
But have found an article in September 2011 edition of Model Boats magazine.
This gives great info on how to reproduce furled sails suitable for scale models.
I have checked and this issue is still available from model boats
http://www.modelboats.co.uk/
Hope this is of help

Correct, with furled sails you'll need to compensate in size because the material used in model sail making is generally too thick which makes them very bulky when furled, therefore you'll need to reduce the sail’s depth which will reduce the bulk.

You'll find this Modelshipwirghts database link useful..

A good material for sail making is Egyptian muslin or any muslin that comes near. That would do you for furling. I have used it in the past and it works a treat when you rig the sail to actually work.BigGrin
