Issue 65 - Contains the rear suspension carbon decals., and has instructions for preparing the engine/gearbox assembly, and Stage 1 of applying the first of the carbon decals.

Preparing the engine/gearbox assembly - Take the engine/gearbox unit that you assembled in issue 60.

Use the masking tape to protect the exhaust pipes on both sides of the engine from damage. Then carefully scrape away the silver paint from the recessed areas of the cowlings on both sides, as outlined in red in the steps.

Turn the engine/gearbox assembly over and check that the bottom of the engine and the bottom of the gearbox are exactly parallel (as indicated by the red lines in the steps) so that they will sit on the undertray correctly. If you need to adjust the alignment, loosen the four screws in the gearbox housing plate (inset) about half a turn. Twist the gearbox itself until it lines up with the engine. (Do not hold the wishbones to do this, as they may be damaged by the pressure.) Re-tighten the fixing screws.

Decals - The decals provided apply a carbon fibre finish to the rear suspension arms and hubs. These are waterslide decals which are quite delicate once released from the backing paper. There are 14 decals on the sheet, and each of them is identified by a number. Use the diagram shown at step 5 on page 15 as a guide to positioning them - Note that only four decals are applied at this stage.

To apply each individual decal, set aside the top protective paper from the sheet, then cut the individual decal and backing paper from the sheet.
Using tweezers, hold the decal by the backing paper, and soak the paper/decal in water for 20-30 seconds until the transfer slides easily when gently touched (do not allow it to float free of its backing paper), then quickly take the decal to the model, and carfully slide it from the paper onto the component, then discard the backing paper. Then use tissue or a cotton bud to remove the excess water once the decal is in place. The cotton bud can also be used to gently push out any trapped air pockets or bubbles.

In the next issue, you will apply the remaining decals to the more complex shapes and compound curves of the rear suspension, (guidance is provided).

Applying the first decals - We start by applying the simplest of them, which curve in only one direction around the rear uprights.

Start by applying the #33 decal around the bottom curve of the left upright, in the position shown in the steps. Hold the soaked decal next to the model, then carefully slide it off the backing paper and into place. Use a cotton bud press the decal carefully into position and to remove any trapped air bubbles, then allow it to dry.

Now apply the #29 decal to the forward curve of the left upright, in the position shown in the diagram and the red line below.

Then repeat with decals #33 and #34 on the right-hand upright.

That's it for this week, place the protective paper over the decal sheet and carefully store the sheet until the next stage.

Issue 66 - Contains suspension carbon decals., and has instructions for Stage 2 of positioning the suspension decals.

In this issue, you continue using the sheet of decals provided in issue 65 to apply the larger decals over the compound curves of the suspension. Carefully store the sheet provided with this issue until later in the build.

When laying decals over compound curves, you may find it helpful to use a decal softening liquid such as Micro Sol/Mico Set. Follow the manufacturer instructions, but in general soak the transfer and position it in the usual way, then brush the softener onto the decal. The decal will start to soften, and will break if you try to move it. Use a cotton bud or tissue to remove excess liquid but do not touch the decal itself. The decal surface will wrinkle, but don’t worry - this is normal and it will flatten as it dries out.
If necessary, you can re-apply softener to remove any wrinkles that haven’t entirely disappeared and allow to dry for 24 hours before handling.

Positioning the decals - Refer to Step 5 on page 15 of Issue 65 as a key to where each of the numbered decals should be placed.
Start by applying the #23 decal to the upper side of the arm projecting from the rear part of the left lower suspension wishbone. After soaking, slide the decal into place using a small soft paintbrush, and adjust its
position so that the outer end stops at the line in the moulding.
Gently smooth the decal over the curves and edges of the moulding, using a cotton bud to press it into position and taking care not to push it out of place.

Apply the #21 decal to the forward arm of the wishbone in a similar way. Make sure you align the end outlined in yellow with the step in the moulding highlighted in red. Smooth the decal over the curves of the arm.
Be careful not to touch the #23 decal you applied earlier, as it will be vulnerable to being moved or damaged until it is completely dry.

Apply the #25 decal to the pushrod in a similar way, aligning the end with the step in the pushrod.

Apply the #31 decal to the curved portion of the upper left rear upright.

Apply the V-shaped #27 decal to the upper wishbone. Take great care not to tear it at the point of the V, and make sure you align up the semi-circular notch at the scew mount point.

Repeat the decal placement to the suspension components on the right-hand side of the model and allow them to dry fully.

That's it for this week store the engine/gearbox unit and the decal sheet.

Issue 67 - Contains the monocoque body, left & right side cowls and 'C' rings., and has instructions for preparing the side cowls and monocoque body.

Preparing the side cowls - Take the cockpit unit assembled in Issue 49 and test-fit the monocoque side cowl as shown. The rear edge fits against the step in the cockpit and its top fits over the upper edge of the cockpit.
Hold the cowl in place and turn the unit over, then run a pencil along the edge of the cockpit to mark a line on the cowl panel.
Take the cowl off the cockpit and carefully scrape off the paint above the pencil line, then scrape the paint from the whole of the flat area up to the point where the cowl starts to curve outwards.

Turn the cowl over and scrape the paint off the recessed areas shown. Be careful not to scratch the finish on the rest of the panel.

Repeat the process to prepare the other side cowl.

Preparing the monocoque body - Carefully scrape the paint off the recessed areas at the front of the monocoque body. Support the body on a soft cloth or similar, which will not damage the painted surfaces.
Scrape the paint off the long recesses on the inside of the body as shown.

There are two recesses under the tips of the two arms extending out to the side of the cockpit, carefully scrape the paint off these areas.

Scrape the paint off the two recesses and the edge of the semicircle at the rear of the cockpit opening.

That's it for this week, keep the parts safe and protected from damage until it’s time to attach them in a later issue. Do not remove the C-rings from the sprue until it is time to use them.

Issue 69 - Contains fuel gate lid parts & the left-hand cockpit fin., and has instructions for Stage 2 of assembling the fuel gate - attaching the fuel gates and cockpit fins.

You will need the monocoque body prepared in issue 67 and the right-hand fuel gate prepared in issue 68 and cockpit fin.

Attaching the fuel gates - Take the monocoque and test-fit the left fuel gate (supplied with this issue) into the hole behind the cockpit, lining up the two projections.
Fit the long pin on the fuel lid through the hole in the gate circled in red. Use a strip of masking tape to hold it in place. Check that the fuel gate is still in the right position and mark around it as shown in the step.

Remove the tape and separate the parts, then scrape off the paint between the edge of the hole and the two lines you just marked. Then carefully apply a little ABS adhesive, making sure you don't get any on the upper surface of the monocoque. Press the fuel gate back in position and hold it for a short while until the glue bonds. Then refit the lid and tape the gate and lid in place while the glue hardens fully.

Then repeat the process on the opposite side of the monocoque using the right-hand fuel gate that you prepared in the last issue.

When the gates are firmly glued, remove the tape holding them in place. Make sure the fuel lids are still in the correct position, then secure them with small pieces of tape, on the outside of the body only, to prevent them being lost or damaged.

Attaching the cockpit fins - Test-fit the left cockpit fin to the monocoque body immediately above the Vodafone logo, fitting the two pins into the two holes shown.
Sparingly apply a general-purpose adhesive immediately next to the two pins, (do not use ABS adhesive, I used a 5 min epoxy applied via a cocktail stick). You can secure the fin with masking tape whilst the glue sets.

Repeat the fin fitting process on the right-hand side of the monocoque.

That's it for this week, carefully store the monococque.

Future issues:

Issue 70 - Contains the left half of the induction pod cowl, induction pod support & induction pod fin., and has instructions for Stage 1 of assembling the induction pod - adding the support and fin to the induction pod cowl.

Issue 71 - Contains right half of the induction pod cowl, induction pod support & induction pod fin., and has instructions for adding the support and fin to the induction pod cowl, and joining the halves of the cowl.

Issue 72 - Contains the nose mounting plate, front & rear push rod mounts, brake fluid reservoirs & caps, brake master cylinder and screws., and has instructions for assembling the brake master cylinder and attaching the front suspension to the monocoque.

Issue 73 - Contains the middle left sidepod cowl, upper left/right sidepod cowls & scews., and has instructions for Stage 2 of the front suspension assembly - attaching the suspension pushrod.
