Hi shipmates! This time I introduce assembling capstans on the bow deck. In Japan the parts of cable holders and chain pipes were provided but parts of the bases of the capstan were not. Photo etching patterns of the bow deck were used instead of the bases. As the pattern do not bulges, these capstans are able to hardly seen and checked because there is hanger deck pats on the capstan. I guess it is the reason of this small omission. But we are able to see and check them from outside somehow. Thus I decided to make scratch building of the bases. #1 Scratch the paper on the pattern with a pencil. The photo etching pattern is copied on the paper. #2 Cut the plastic panel as the same shape as the copied paper of the pattern. #3 Mount epoxy putty #4 Shape the bases and attach chain pipes, cable holders and break cocks made of brass wire #5 Prime the parts #6 Paint them in Sasebo color #7 Attach them on the bow Best Regards, Yutaro Yutaro HONMA attached the following image(s): DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hi Andy and shipmates! I am looking forward to see your Akagi enhanced, Andy. I'm waiting! This time I introduce making the reels. Even if these are inconspicuous parts, these are important for enhancement of IJN warships. A reel is consist of 2 wheels, 2 frames and a dram. This wheel is not a simple circle but a spoked wheel. #1 Make wheels and frames by plastic paper #2 Assemble and paint the large reels #3 Assemble and paint the small reels #4 Attach them on the bow deck Best Regards, Yutaro Yutaro HONMA attached the following image(s): DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hi tf64and shipmates! Thank you for giving me courage to continue this topic, tf64! I introduce enhancement of the port side stern hanger deck. There is a metal bent part on the floor. Although I had once glued it on the floor, I removed it for enhancement. This metal bent part simply represents the several sheds like structures and trusses there. As I had a plan of there, I decided to make the details of the sheds and other structures. #1 An original hangar deck wall with a metal bent part on the floor #2 Replace the metal part to a straight plastic panel and embed the hole of the floor #3 Paint the wall in gray and the floor in linoleum color #4 Illustration of the structures on the floor of 1/350 scale Akagi model from Hasegawa Co. #5 Build the sheds, trusses and other structures #6 Paint them and attach on the floor Best Regards, Yutaro Yutaro HONMA attached the following image(s): DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hi Mike and Shipmates! Thank you for a comment, Mike. I shall send information as possible as I can. This time I introduce painting and attaching decals on the The Nakajima B5N torpedo bomber , "Kate". in detail. This casted epoxy putty model is copied from original parts by using a method descried before. #1 Preparation the paints for Kate. I use 6 kinds of paints. DeAGOSTINI Japan indicated * marked 3 kinds of color. 1. Flat black (H12)* 2. Steel (H18) 3. IJN Green (H59)* 4. Silver (H8) (IJN Gray H62)* 5. Interior green (H58) 6. Tire (H77) #2 Hobby color series paints are easy to use because they are water paints. But they have a severe weak point that the caps often fixed and are not able to be opened. In Japan cap opener for Hobby color series is sold. This is a one of leverage and is very convenience, I was very glad enough to open every fixed caps when I bought it. #3 DeaGOSTINI Japan recommend to use black at the cockpit, but I think interior green is more suitable there. #4 Tires are painted in Tire. color not in flat black that DeAGOSTINI Japan indicated. #5 Decal kit for Kate is distributed in issue 26. Under surface of the Kate's body and winds are painted in silver, although DeAGOSTINI Japan indicated us to paint there in IJN Gray. #6 Give the surface of Kate a coat of mark setter. #7 Give the attached decals a coat of mark softer #8 Kate completed other than canopy #9 I have total 4 copied aircrafts for displaying the hangar deck , but I need more aircrafts. Best Regards, Yutaro Yutaro HONMA attached the following image(s): DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hi Andy and shipmates! Thank you for a comment! I am always glad to read your comment, Andy. This time I introduce building the plank bow deck. A part of the bow deck was indicated to be painted in Tan color, because DeAGOSTINI Japan might think there used to be a plank deck. Although I know a lot of persons insist there was a linoleum deck there, I dare to select plank deck on it. The Akagi was a heavy cruiser when she was born. I think that plank deck in the bow is more suitable for heavy cruiser. Since I don’t have any more evidence about it, I don’t deny linoleum deck on the bow. #1 I used wood shaving for making planks #2 Pile shaving and slice it in 0.5mm width. #3 Attach the sliced shaving on the bow #4 A part of bow is covered with sliced shaving #5 One of my friends taught me that there were washing places at the both side of the plank deck. I made them by plastic lumber. This method became a trial case for making a flight deck of the Akagi. Best Regards, Yutaro Yutaro HONMA attached the following image(s): DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hi Andy and Mike! Thank you for both comments! The making of flight deck is going to be started from issue 77. We were given papers on which wooden patterns were printed and were indicated to use them as the planks. A lot of Japanese builder thought what material should be used instead of the papers. I will report it in the near future. By the way, I attach a picture here. This is "TAKOYAKI", octopus balls and is a kind of takeouts in Japan. Japanese eat the octopus like Greek people do. There are pieces of octopus meats in 8 baked flour balls. The number of the balls is always 8. The material is hidden in this picture. Hi Dontshootme, Mike and Andy Thank you for giving me the 3 answers to my question. The material is a dish. #1 After eating TAKOYAKI, there remains the dish that is made of thin wood shaving. #2 If I use this dish, I will have the Akagi with TAKOYAKI flavor. And I will go more fat. So I had to search the dishes and found new TAKOYAKI dishes for the Akagi building. To tell a truth, people living in the west area of Japan often cook TAKOYAKI in their house at lunch time. This is a reason why they sell TAKOYAKI dished in the store. #3 Cut the dish into 3cmX1mm planks. We call such plank "Kyogi (経木)" in Japanese. A large numbers of Kyogis were needed to cover the all surface of the flight deck. #4 This is completed flight deck. I will introduce the detail of the process, which was more load than attaching Jack stay on the hull, in the near future. Hi shipmates! This time, I introduce a small enhancement for wing tip lights of aircrafts. It was indicated to paint small red and blue spots at the both tips of the wings. At the beginning of the building I used clear plastic pieces painted in clear red and clear blue, but they were too small for me to make all of them. I had to make them more easily. #1 I used this type of bond. This bond go clear when it become hard. #2 Mix the bond and the paints. #3 Put a small drop of the mixture at the notch of the wing tip. I deleted wings and made the notch. #4 When the drop became hard, it became clear blue and clear red. Hi Andy! You are right. That is a white wood glue that Konishi Co. sells. I guess you may know "KONY BOND"s and the glue is one of them. You can see Chinese letter "木" in my pic #1. This letter means tree or wood Best Regards, Yutaro DeAGOSTINI 1/250 the YAMATO, 1/250 the AKAGI. Hasegawa Co. 1/350 Battle ship NGATO, 1/350 Aircraft carrier Akagi, Battle ship MIKASA.
