I just received my last package for Yamato.
Although I still have a fair bit of work to do I am already casting ahead for my next project. I have built the Spitfire and the Yamato and am well aware of all the criticisms and draw backs of part kits.
But the blunt fact is for me £25 a month is below the wife radar, forking out more for "a toy" just is not much of an option.
I thoroughly enjoyed the build, but it shocked me just how inept I was also, (Airfix has been my previous level) there is a horrible glaring asymatry to the hull for instance, in that the port holes and what is claimed to be the Load Lines dont match up Port and Starboard.
I had done half the metal superstructure before getting it into my thick head superglue is not the right medium, I finally switched to twin syringe fed Araldite and what a difference in build quality from then!
I would dearly love to go back again and do it right this time, but what the hey...
Question is what now? I had intended the Hood, but that seems to have gone down (again) Victory is tempting but I suspect still beyond my aquired skills. Any thoughts to share? Akagi looks interesting or maybe the Surprise for a change of pace.
Regards all

Welcome to the forum, Zanussi. The choices are difficult but with the help of Mr T's official build and the other excellent builds you cannot go wrong with any of the builds on offer. This is one great place to be and I wish I had joined earlier than I did. I would not have been falling around and making so many mistakes. Welcome and enjoy your next choice of build. Hi Zanussi as Mr T has pointed out its whatever u fancy but if you think the victory or suprise will be too much for you why dont you try the San Fransisco, its got simpler rigging and will be a good introduction to classic/galleon type ship building, also as Karl has sugested the build diarys from Mr T and several other builders would make the Victory a breeze to compleat as all the pitfalls are pointed out as you progress with the build .As you probablly already know im building the Yamato and the Akagi and i would recomend doing tha Akagi aswell, put it this way what you have learned from your Yamato build will make the Akagi a far more simpler build and a better model at the end.I have to say iv learned from other modelers on the forum and every model you make has its own chalenges to overcome and its those chalenges that make you a more acomplished builder at the end[several of the builders doing the Victory are doing there 1st wooden ships and are making a fine job of it] So its up to you m8 but biting off that little bit more than you think ul be able to chew might just turn into the chalenge that you wanted regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

My first build was the titanic and what a hash I made of it but it taught me a lot about building large scale models.I have since built the yamato (4 more issues to go) and it has turned out extremely well only because I had built the titanic and lit taught me a lot.I'm going for the victory next as this has to be the ultimate build.I would say don't give up you can do more than you realise.

The Hood is alive and well. However, Hachette, being what they apparently are have made a hell of a mess by under estimating the demand. I was supposed to start on issue 1, I waited 2 months without an issue, they finally said, Oh! Oops, we mean issue 16, then nothing. I sourced all the back issues from a fellow in the Netherlands, then decided Hachette could go get stuffed, and am getting the issues from a fellow in South Africa. BTW, I am in the US! Long journey for a model! Tired, Old, and Cranky!

Thanks guys, I have read through the build diary of the Victory and phew! Tempting.
I am not sure I am willing to post any photos, too embaressed. It would have helped hugely if the build diary had kept step with the issues, as it does for the Victory (or appears to), as it was I found helpful hints after I had already bogged up.
As others have noted though it was a steep learning curve, I do not regret it and am keen to stay on the wagon. My last issue just arrived a couple of hours ago, as usual the post woman just stormed in and chucked it at me while I was watching TV - er I mean working from home on the latest software upgrade ... cough. I am sure they are not supposed to do that, but what the heck! The long awaited base and lots of rigging type stuff.
The lack of a dedicated working space was the worst I found, competing for the dining table all the time, battle damage has been inevitable as well as lost bits. For my next project I am just completing build of a shed from scavanged timber which will have a dedicated bench, storage and tools, and best of all - a lock!
At least I will be spared sarcastic remarks about bits of machine gun barrel zipping around the room!
Only one main criticism of the model: The pictures are way way too small in the instructions, why? they are PDF documents, how hard to have the original size shots included?

Hi Zanussi, I would definitely go for the Vic, it has been the best build yet for me...I know that it has had its little hiccups, but boy, has it been enjoyable and fun!! As for any small pictures, for referencing...I have always found it handy to scan the picture, save it to my computer so I could zoom in on the saved picture. Anyway, whatever build you go for...Enjoy mate.

Thanks, dumb me just assumed Hood was part of De-Ag, checked on Hackett and the earliest issue they will send is 16 now, given all the comments on problems with orders I am not going to risk trying to source back issues.
Rightly or wrongly I have decided on HMS Surprise, I served in Frigates all my career and am writing a history of them so it is sort of appropriate.
