Hot off the press....

Issue 109 contains parts to build the 18ft Cutter, which is the smallest of the ships boats, and is constructed on similar lines to the previously supplied 34ft Launch, this issue also contains the parts which make up the Figurehead.

Thanks for the Info Mr T

Hi Shipmates! Cool

We know what is to come up to issue 106, thanks to Tomicks Official Build Diary, this will leave 14 issues that we don't know about. In these 14 issues we have to finish the dummy guns, fit the rest of the sails, finish the rest of the rigging, make another anchor & fitting the 4 anchors, the ship’s crew?, the flags, get the part to make the removable gun deck diorama and some other small part to finish.

That’s a lot to fit into 14 issues, the extra boats are starting to look unlikely to appear! there has been no word from admin about the other boats. So it looks like we only get the 1 boat, I hope I'm wrong! or I'll have to make some to finish the ship.

If you goto the Italian Deag
about 2/3 down the page you will see that dragocombat has fitted the supports for 4 boats.

Its looking like the quarter davits will be installed at 116, where you'll have the option of fitting them in their vertical (stowed) position, or in their (ready for use) lowered position.

At the battle of Trafalgar, the quarter davit boats (25ft cutter's), were not hanging from the davits.

correct me if I am wrong but at Trafalgar I think the boats were towed behind ready for survivors etc

Hi Jase, you are right...I received this e.mail from Andrew Baines: Curator of HMS Victory:

Thank you for your email. I can confirm that Victory’s Quarter Davits were present at the Battle of Trafalgar and, as you say, the boats from them were towed behind the ship. The remaining ship’s boats were housed in their usual position, on the skid beams in the waist, for the duration of the battle.

On the subject of the stern davits, there is some uncertainty as to whether or not they were present at Trafalgar. In completing the ship’s restoration in 2005, these davits were removed, reflecting the most up-to-date research which suggested they were not in the ship in October 1805.

So, I shall be leaving the Victory's boats off, but on display behind the model

Thanks for that. I guess it all depends how you want to display your model and i think having the boats displayed seperatly would look effective. I am thinking of displaying the ship prior to battle so I can have boats mounted on ship and not have to cover the sky light on the poop deck etc. interesting comment on the Davits I think I may leave off the stern davits and leav on the others.

An ex-Victory curator (Tim Goodwin) has noted the following within one of his Victory books:

"According to Midshipman Rivers' journal and the carpenter's expenses (held at the Royal Naval Museum), when Victory went into battle at Trafalgar, the Sea boats, hanging on the davits, were lowered and towed astern.
Rarely would all boats be lowered before battle, owing to the time required to remove them from the ship."

The parts for the final ship's boat (32ft Admirals Barge), are supplied in issue 118 and is completed in 119, and is another plank-on-frame build.

Hi Team

Looks like we are not going to receive the two ships boats (cutters) that hung from the davits or were trailed behind.

I have a source for these in 1/84 scale if any one is interested please PM me
