Hi, is there any possibility of the Drommedaris or one of Jan Van Riebeeck's other ships being offered, for those South Africans who want to capture some of our history before it becomes completely forgotten.
Thanks

Good idea there Quintin. I do believe you might have some reasonable support there.

I've been looking on the net, and can only find a couple of sites that sell a finished product. Much cooler to build it yourself, I reckon. Plans for a scratch build are proving impossible to find though

Well, the Drommedaris was one of the 3 ships that Jan Van Riebeeck (the guy that pretty much founded Cape Town, i think that makes him pretty famous. so far I haven't found much other than old paintings and info from dusty old history books. I shall keep digging, there has to be more somewhere. I may even go to the lengths of contacting someone at the castle.

Thanks for the tip Andy, here is a link to the one of the few models of drommedaris I have found so far, but it's a finished product, which isn't what we are after.

Hi Quintin,

There used to be a replica which could be seen @ Santarama Miniland in La Rochelle, Johannesburg. See photo:

© Ina Gouws (2008)

I have not seen any reference yet to models of the "Rijger" or "De Goede Hoop" which accompanied "Drommedaris", but still searching.

I have been on the same mission since being introduced to the HMS Victory model as well as the Santa Maria (also by Artesania Latina).

I have been on a hiatus from building my models (including the "Sagres") storing the Vic parts carefully. I am also collecting the Tiger Tank, the McLaren, the Aston Martin and soon the Zero, maybe the Surprise as well. I saw a Centenary Kit of the Titanic recently and had to force myself away, before surrendering.Crying

My reference library, tool collection and workshop is almost complete, then its goodbye cruel world, hello model world!

We are so fortunate to have all these beautiful large scale models available to us at last in an affordable format.

I now just need a 1:8 Porsche 911(901) kit to complete my collection, then I can happily go to the big model world in the sky!Laugh

Groete

thanks for the info guys, I will check it out, one thing I have learned in my searches is that the Drommedaris was a "jacht" class vessel, there are several completed models of this type available, so there must be plans somewhere :-) there are also plenty of pictures of the Drommedaris, so it wouldn't be too much effort to adapt a fairly standard hull type into what we want.

Hi Quintin

Take a look at this site. http://modelshipworld.co...2/viewtopic.php?t=15899

This person is planning to build a VOC type boat from the 1600s. On page 4 of his log he has links to Dutch building. I am sure if you contact him he may be able to assist you.

Cheers.

Next Build: Sovereign of the Seas Started collecting. Redrawing of plans for Santisima Trinidad for a scratchbuild. Santisima Trinidad - waiting for launch.

I have google hours on Van Riebeeck's ships. The history behind the ships is huge for South Africa as it stands today.

It carried huge supplies to create settlements in Cape Town. If I can build such a ship, it will certainly stand proud in my lounge as I am a proud Cape Townian.

If you read about the history of Cape Town, the backdrop of the Drommedaris stands proud.

This is why I would love to build a model of the Drommedaris, it's a big part of our history. I still haven't found and plans though. The search goes on...
By the way, what do you ride?
