Issue 70 - Contains the left half of the induction pod cowl, induction pod support & induction pod fin., and has instructions for Stage 1 of assembling the induction pod - adding the support and fin to the induction pod cowl.

Assembling the induction pod cowl - Test-fit the three parts together as shown in the steps.

The ends of the induction pod support fit into two matching recesses in the cowl. Make sure you have it the right way round.
The induction pod fin has a short locating pin that fits into the hole circled in red, and its ends fit as indicated.

Separate the parts and use a cocktail stick to apply small spots of general-purpose adhesive to the points indicated, (do not use ABS adhesive, I used 5 min epoxy).

Carefully fit the support and fin back in place again, and hold the assembly together until the glue bonds.Tape the parts together with two short pieces of masking tape to hold the support and fin while the glue sets completely.

That's it for this week, carefully store the pod cowl half.

Issue 71 - Contains right half of the induction pod cowl, induction pod support & induction pod fin., and has instructions for adding the support and fin to the induction pod cowl, and joining the cowl halves.

The parts provided are for the right-hand side of the induction pod. Assemble them in the same way as you did for the left-hand side, then join the two halves together to complete the assembly of this part of the bodywork.

Joining the pod cowl halves - Follow all the steps given in Issue 70 to assemble the right-hand half
of the cowl in the same way as the left. Make sure the glue has set fully before you continue.

Apply small spots of general-purpose adhesive to the edge of the right-hand induction pod cow at the points indicated in red. Ensure you don’t get any glue onto the painted outer surfaces, (again I use 5 min epoxy).

Match up the two halves carefully, and gently press them together until the glue starts to bond. Be careful
not to press hard on the induction pod fins.
Tape the assembly firmly together to hold the parts in place while the glue sets completely.

That's it for this week, carefully protect and store the induction pod cowl until it’s time to assemble the rest of the bodywork.

Issue 72 - Contains the nose mounting plate, front & rear push rod mounts, brake fluid reservoirs & caps, brake master cylinder and screws., and has instructions for assembling the brake master cylinder and attaching the front suspension to the monocoque.

Assembling the brake master cylinder - Scrape the paint off the brake fluid reservoirs and master cylinder in the areas outlined in red and yellow in the steps.

Apply a little general-purpose adhesive to the hole in the top of each reservoir. Press the cap into place and hold it until the adhesive bonds.

Apply adhesive to the areas you cleaned off in Step 1 and press the parts together, making sure the L-shaped brackets outlined in red face down. Leave for 24 hours

Attaching the front suspension to the monocoque - Take the monocoque body assembled in Issue 69 and the front suspension assemblies from Issue 54. You will also need the C-rings provided with Issue 67.

Fit the rear pushrod mount inside the monocoque so that the two pins marked in red go in the sockets under the points ringed in yellow. Draw around the mount, then scrape off the paint in the marked area.

Apply a little ABS adhesive, then press the mount back into place and leave the monocoque upside down on a soft cloth for an hour while the glue hardens.

Cut six of the C-rings from the sprue as shown, leaving the tabs intact. Make sure you do not lose these small parts as you cut them from the sprue and that they are carefully installed to stop them springing off into the unknown whilst fitting them.

The C-rings are shaped to be a press-fit onto the three ball joints on the ends of the suspension wishbones.

Take the left-hand suspension and, as shown, fit the three ball joints into the holes. Fit the pin into the hole, then feed the pushrod into the hole, and fit the steering rod as shown through the hole. Check that these parts are all visible on the inside.

Use tweezers to hold the projecting parts of the C-rings and slide them onto the ball joints to lock the wishbones in place. Turn the projections to face rearwards.
Repeat with the right-hand suspension. Then remove the two strips of masking tape that were used to hold the steering rods to the wishbones during assembly.

That's it for this week. Be careful not to put pressure on the front suspension before continuing the assembly next time, and carefully store the master cylinder.

Issue 73 - Contains the middle left sidepod cowl, upper left/right sidepod cowls & scews., and has instructions for Stage 2 of the front suspension assembly - attaching the suspension pushrod.

Attach the suspension pushrod - Test-fit the front pushrod mount in place. The two projections indicated fit towards the rear of the car and the portion marked fits into the slot in the monocoque body.

Move the right front suspension until the tip of the pushrod fits between the front and rear mounts, in line with the hole indicated. Insert a type ‘E’ screw and carefully tighten it just enough to secure the pushrod.

Repeat to secure the left front pushrod in the same way.

Attach the nose mounting plate to the monocoque - Test-fit the nose mounting plate after laying the monocoque body upside down on a soft tissue to protect the painted surface. Hold the nose mounting plate as shown, with the two indicated notches uppermost. Note the single notch at the bottom, which engages with the horseshoe shape, and the two grooves indicated, which fit over the steering rods.

You need to angle the plate so it will fit under the two steering rods, then rock it back as indicated so they fit in their grooves. Carefully fit the notch at the bottom over the horseshoe-shaped projection. This is a little tricky, so before applying any glue, practise it until you can do it smoothly. When the plate is seated correctly, note the glue contact area as shown in the step.

Use a cocktail stick to apply a little general-purpose adhesive (I used epoxy) along the contact line at the end of the monocoque body as shown. Refit the mounting plate as earlier, then apply light pressure in the direction shown until the adhesive takes hold. Ensure that the glue used is not excessive to the point that it oozes out along front facing edge.
Secure the mounting plate with a strip of masking tape and leave the glue to bond for 24 hours.

That's it for this week, you have now completed the attachment of the front suspension and fitted the nose mounting plate. Carefully wrap the unit in soft tissue until it is next worked on.

Issue 74 - Contains the right middle and upper & lower sidepod cowls., and has instructions for fitting the engine/gearbox and cockpit to the underbody, fitting the battery, fitting the side cowls and assembling and fitting the side podcowls.

Assembling the main body 1 - Items to have ready - Battery and cockpit fittings prepared in issue 47, Underbody assembly prepared in issue 56, Engine/gearbox unit prepared in issue 66 and the Cockpit unit and side cowls prepared in issue 67.
You will also need 13 type ‘E’ screws from issue 44 and 2 type ‘G’ screws from issue 45.

Test-fit the cockpit and engine/gearbox units together. Fit the two pins into the two holes and ensure that the projections engage properly. View the assembly from the side to make sure that the hole in the moulding is central.
Holding the two parts together, engage the forward end of the cockpit with the cockpit front, fitting it over the switch panels as indicated, then lower the cockpit/engine/gearbox assembly until it rests on the underbody.

Carefully turn the assembly over, holding the parts in place. Fit type ‘E’ screws in all 11 holes indicated to hold the cockpit in place, and fit type ‘G’ screws in the two holes indicated with red circles to secure the engine/gearbox.
Tighten all the screws gradually, starting with the two type ‘G’ screws, leaving a little slack until they are all in place, then screw them all fully home.

Turn the model over and insert another Type ‘E’ screw through the hole in the suspension arm, and tighten this to secure the suspension.
Repeat on the right-hand side of the model.

Fit the battery to the underbody - Test-fit the battery onto the underbody. It fits over the oval shape, with the two connections facing forwards. Use tweezers to position it, making sure you can fit it in place smoothly without touching other areas of the cockpit.
Apply a little ABS adhesive to the areas indicated, then position the batter and press it into place for two or three minutes until the glue bonds.

Fitting the side cowls - Take the left side cowl and test-fit it in place against the cockpit (you may find it useful to refer to issue 67 to see where it should align).
Apply ABS adhesive to the area where you removed the paint, then press the part back into position until it bonds, and secure it with a strip of masking tape.

Repeat on the right-hand side of the cockpit. Allow the glue to set for an hour, then remove the masking tape.

Assembling the sidepod cowls - Test-fit the left middle and left lower sidepod cowl parts together so that the edges slot together and the pin engages in the matching hole.

Scrape the silver paint off the contact area you identified earlier, then cut a short piece of masking tape and attach it to the middle cowl as shown.
Apply a little ABS adhesive to the contact area. Then reassemble the parts and use the tape to secure them tightly together.
Repeat for the right-hand cowl parts and leave both for an hour or so until the glue hardens fully, then remove the masking tape.

Fitting the sidepod cowls - Test-fit the left sidepod cowl to the main assembly, then apply general-purpose adhesive to the line shown and apply ABS adhesive to the points marked. Press the two parts together, then bind the assembly with masking tape to secure it.

Repeat on the right-hand side of the car.

Take the left upper sidepod cowl. Test-fit it on top of the assembly, then apply ABS adhesive to the contact areas. Press the parts together until the adhesive starts to bond. Then tape the parts together with masking tape, pulling it tight in the direction shown to make sure that the gap indicated remains closed up.

Repeat on the other side of the car and leave the parts taped up until the adhesive has hardened fully.

That completes the assembly of the underbody, cockpit, engine and gearbox, together with the first part
of the side pods.

Issue 75 - Contains barge board and deflector parts., and has instructions for preparing the barge boards, assembling the deflectors and fitting the seat into the cockpit.

Preparing the barge boards - Take the left-hand bargeboard and carefully scrape o the paint along the thin red line and in the areas shown hatched red and yellow. As the material is black, finished with matt black paint, take care to remove only the paint.

Then repeat the process to prepare the right-hand bargeboard, (the bargeboards will be attached to the car later on).

Assembling the deflectors - The deflectors are each made up of four parts. Those on left and right are mirror images, so use the step photo to identify the set for the left-hand deflector.

Test-fit the deflector skirt to the deflector and then glue into place using ABS adhesive as shown. Then press the assembly together on a flat surface to make sure it is square. Hold it for a few minutes until the adhesive bonds.

Test-fit the deflector stay. The flat end fits into the recess (carefully remove any burr from the flat part of stay where it will sit into the recess).

Apply a little ABS adhesive as shown, then press the parts together until the adhesive bonds. Ensure that the deflector is set into the ange of the joint.

Test-fit the deflector fin by slotting the angled tab into the angled notch. When the parts are correctly aligned, the surface of the fin should be parallel to the deflector in two planes, as shown.
Apply a little ABS adhesive to the notch then fit the parts back together and press them against a flat surface for a few minutes to keep them in alignment.

Repeat the assembly for the other deflector.

Fitting the seat into the cockpit - Take the main chassis that you assembled in issue 74, the driver’s seat that you assembled in issue 59, and two Type ‘E’ screws.
Before fitting the seat, make sure that none of the seat belts have become detached and re-stick if necessary.

Take the left and right seat brackets provided with issue 47. Test-fit them to the sides of the seat, noting which way round they go and fitting the two pins on each bracket into the matching holes in the seat.
Apply a little ABS adhesive to the contact areas, then press the brackets back into place and hold them until the glue bonds and allow the glue to fully set.

Carefully test-€ fit the seat into the cockpit as shown. Its base sits on the rectangle on the chassis floor. When you are familar with the fit, apply a little ABS adhesive around the rectangle and press the seat base into place.

Now secure the rear of the seat by inserting two Type ‘E’ screws € fitted through the holes indicated and in the cockpit. Do not overtighten the screws.

You can now fit the €first of the shoulder straps. Their mountings have two pins, that fit into the two holes indicated. Practice €fitting the pins in place using tweezers, until you can do it smoothly. Be careful not to damage the ‘BOSS’ logo on the straps.

Holding the belt with tweezers so that the pins point upwards, put a drop of general purpose adhesive on each pin using a cocktail stick, then press the pins into the holes and hold for a couple of minutes.
Secure the mounting using a small piece of masking tape.

Repeat to fit the second shoulder strap. Leave the masking tape in place until the glue has bonded fully, then carefully remove it.

That's it for this week. Store the assembly carefully, together with the bargeboards and deflectors.
Make sure that you do not lose the two small bargeboard stays that you have not yet attached.

Issue 76 - Contains the induction box cowls, the forward wing, vortex generators and screws., and has instructions for preparing the induction box cowl, attaching the vortex generators, assembling the induction box cowl, and attaching the main cowls to the body.

Prepare the induction box cowl - Test-fit the two halves of the induction box cowl together to identify the contact areas, then lightly sand off the paint from the large contact area identified. Take great care not to damage the thin tapered end.

Gently use the back of a craft knife to scrape off the paint ftom the interior notch as shown in the steps.
Repeat on the opposite side of the induction box cowl.

Attach the vortex generators - Use the back of the cutter to scrape the paint off the pins as shown. To identify the left-hand vortex generator, check the mouldings for two moulding marks at the points shown, (the moulding marks should be on the underside).

Test-fit the two pins carefully through the holes in the left-hand cowl. If necessary, clean off a little more paint until the support legs of the vortex generator fit flush.
Working on the inside of the cowl, apply a very small amount of ABS adhesive to both holes, then immediately refit the vortex generator and lay the assembly down to allow the glue to harden.

Assemble the induction box cowl - Use a cocktail stick to apply adhesive thinly to the flat contact areas and locating pins on both parts of the induction box cowl. Gently press the halves together until the glue bonds, avoiding the vortex generators and ensuring there are no gaps.
When the glue has set, gently scrape the paint off the oval socket on the edge under the thin tail of the induction box cowl, where the forward wing fits. Gently scrape the paint off the square lug projecting up from the wing itself, and along a thin line down the centre of the wing.

Test-fit the wing to make sure you have cleaned the contact areas thoroughly. The forward-facing lug arrowed yellow fits into the socket circled in yellow, and the upward facing lug fits into the socket as shown.

Separate the parts and apply general-purpose adhesive sparingly to the contact areas. Fit the wing back in place and press the parts together until the glue bonds. Make sure that the wing is level, and aligned at right angles to the centreline of the cowl.
Support the assembly on the corner of a small box (about 30mm high) and leave for 24 hours to allow the glue to harden completely.

Attaching the cowls to the main body - You will need the main body from Issue 75 and the lower engine cowls from Issues 61 and 63, plus the flipups from Issues 62 and 64 and the flip-up supports from Issue 36.

Test-fit the lower left engine cowl in position, without glue. Make sure you can locate it easily without leaving any gaps. Repeat with the other cowl.

Check that both cowls clear the rear wishbones. Note, if one wishbone seems to be about 1mm higher than the other, the engine may not be seated correctly. If so, loosen the two screws that hold the engine (as shown in Issue 74, page 13, Step 4). Lift the engine a little and push it back down, moving it gently from side to side until it is properly seated.

When both wishbones are about the same height, you may still need to trim the arches in the cowls a little with a sharp craft knife so that they do not touch the wishbone.

Apply general-purpose adhesive to the edge of the left cowl indicated by the yellow line. Do not glue the arch. Place the cowl back in position and hold it until the glue is firmly bonded.
Secure the cowl in position with masking tape on the inside. You may need to add some to the outside at the rear, but make sure you remove any excess glue  first.

Repeat for the right cowl and leave the tape in position for 24 hours.

Apply ABS cement to the bottom of the left  flip-up support (note that they are marked with an L and R to indicate left and right) and place it in position. Make sure that the support is the right way round and that the two pins fit into the matching holes in the underbody.

To make sure that the support is in the correct position, immediately  fit the left  flip-up on top of the support and cowl, without glue. Make sure that the  flip-up is seated on top of the cowl and that the support is correctly located in its recess. Leave the assembly for the glue to set, holding the  ip-up with tape if necessary.

Remove the left  flipup and apply general purpose adhesive along the top of the cowl, on top of the  flip-up and the recess in the engine cover as shown, where you earlier removed the paint.
Replace the flip-up, making sure that it is correctly seated on all three components. Hold it in place until the glue has firmly bonded.

Repeat to fit the second flip-up support and flip-up on the right-hand side of the model.

Hold all the parts together firmly with strips of masking tape and leave for 24 hours for the
glue to harden fully.

That's it for this stage, carefully store these assemblies, together with the unused screws, until you need them to continue the assembly.

Fitting the monocoque to the main body - Unscrew the end stop at the top of the steering crank, which you fitted temporarily in Issue 56. Be very careful not to lose this small part or its securing screw.

Tilt the steering crank to the left or right, and make sure that the tip of the steering column stays engaged with the hole in the crank.

Use strips of masking tape to pull the lower suspension arms outlined yellow up towards the upper arm outlined in red. Ensure that the two pins are not covered by the tape.

Test-fit the assembly to the main body, nose  first. The two tabs at the front of the main body fit into the recesses at the bottom of the mounting plate.

Rock the monocoque back so that the edge fits over the area shown inthe steps, and the pin fits into the hole. Press it down firmly, easing it past the top of the cockpit tub to get it to  fit down fully. Make sure there are no gaps along the area shown in the steps.

Now separate the parts and use a cocktail stick to apply a little general-purpose adhesive to all the contact areas. Quickly but carefully reassemble, and press the parts together for 2-3 minutes. Then tape all the joints, taking care not to apply tape on top of the logos, especially the ‘aigo’ logo on the side, and be mindful of any glue ooze which might get trapped behind the masking tape.

Secure the back of the monocoque with two type ‘C’ screws through the holes indicated. Do not overtighten them.
Leave the tapes for 24 hours to allow the glue to harden fully, then remove. Do not remove the tapes over the fuel filler caps.

Centre the steering crank and use tweezers to insert the right and left steering rods into the holes. Then refit the end stop you removed earlier into the hole. Do not overtighten it, and check that you can turn the wheel hubs freely to right and left.

That's it for this stage., carefully store this issue's parts as they are not fitted until later on.

Note - We will shortly have instructions available for those of you wish to gloss your McLaren MP4-23 model.

Please note the following:

- This is for the experienced modeller only.

- If you gloss your model then please do not progress your build past issue 77.

The steps will be posted up into the forum the next week or so.

The official build will follow the un-glossed route, this is purely an option should you wish to have a gloss finish on your model.

Issue 79 - Contains the front fairing, upper border wings and the induction pod spacer., and has instructions for assembling the engine cowls, applying the decals to the front wing and bargeboard, and fitting the bargeboard.

Issue 80 - Contains the left-hand mirror, cockpit canard & fin, pushrod & monocoque covers, and a revised induction box., and has instructions for assembling the main body 7 - Fitting the induction box and fitting the induction box cowl.

Issue 81 - Contains the right-hand mirror, cockpit canard & fin, pushrod & monocoque cover., and has instructions for fitting the pushrod covers on the main body, applying carbon decals to the fins & canards, fitting the display panel, pitot tube & camera, and installing the canards and on the body.
