Hi Guys. I have skipped ahead of the magazine slightly and I am thinking about placing the first set of dummy cannons but I am unsure where they fit. Could someone enlighten me please as to which level they go on? Thanks You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi riff-raff!  There are two types of dummy cannons the large 32 pounders fit in the lower deck gun ports and the smaller 12 pounders that are used in the rest of the gun ports. Hope this helps! Darron

Yes John! Middle deck guns should be 24 pounders but DeAGOSTINI only used 12 pounders and 32 pounders in this build. I think Lord Nelson would've had something to say about that!  Darron

Hi Riff raff, I was fortunate to source 24 pounders for my build  as the bore of the barrel is different. some members I believe drilled out the barrels of the guns supplied to simulate the 24 pounder Regards Mike MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.

Just what I like about this forum. The simplest questions can sometimes result in the greatest of debates!! I am sure Nelson would not be pleased with Diag messing with his ships armament. If I may make a suggestion? CMB carry a stock of dummy cannons. If you look under Amati ship fittings (weaponry) they have a selection of dummy barrels in a bronze finish, they are avaiable in various sizes and prices, I have just ordered 24 of the 17mm type at 30p each. They will need a slight amount of modification to the muzzle end but nothing too severe, I just think they are a slighly better alternative than using the supplied 12 pounders in place of 24 pounders. Just a thought, Steve..

Is the only difference between the 12 and 24 pounders the size of the bore???? I have been making barrell plugs (Painted red) for the exisiting deck guns and intend to do the same for the dummy barrels. Will this cover up the difference I wonder GilShapley attached the following image(s): Current Build:-

Hi Gil
In my humble opinion as a newcomer to wooden ship modelling, the idea you have in fitting barrel plugs to the twelve pounders on the middle gun deck might work if they were made larger than the diameter of the barrel itself (as your photo shows).
If you wanted to make your build as authentic as possible though, the barrel plugs on the ship itself are as far as I know, only just a little bit larger than the bore of the cannon and wouldn't overlap the outside diameter of the barrel.
A good illustration is found in the book "HMS Victory - First Rate 1765" by Jonathan Eastland & Iain Ballantyne, page 46, top photo.This is a very good reference book which has absolutely hundreds of colour photos of both the interior and the outside of the 'old gal'.
As I say, I'm no expert at this and other shipmates might be able to enlarge on this subject. But anyway, I hope this helps you a little.
