Anybody know what colour the paints are we need. I noticed in the Mr T's official build he mentions red and bronze for the cannons and carriages and I would like in preparation for this build to purchase the paints now so have them all ready for kick off.

Colours so far for the painted version are red, bronze, black, white and gold with a few others to add.

Unsure about any wood stain requirement at this stage, though ultimately you are free to paint/finish as you choose.

As with Gaz's question, I'm wondering which shade of red to go for? I'd appreciate suggestions on what reds others have used, much appreciated.
As I'm new to this level of modelling, the wood staining possibilities do sound interesting too.

hi all,I will be using red ochre for the red,and walnut stain in Danish oil for the black,I would suggest the admiralty range of acrylic paints,and Ronseal water based matt varnish.

I don't think I'll be painting my gun carriages red. I like the look of them on the model space page. Have they just been varnished?

I had the same issue, and wanted to make sure I have the correct paints. In the Tool shop section for the HMS Victory, Deagostini have a set of paints, which seem to be similar colours for the SOTS:

HMS Victory Paint Set comprises 14 X 18ml waterbased paints.
3 X Dull black
1 X Matt (metal) Black
1 x Matt white
3 x Yellow Ochre
1 x Red Ochre
1 X French blue
1 X Olive Green
1 x Wood (Walnut) Brown
1 X Gold/Brass
1 X Copper

Expensive if you buy here, but at least you know you're getting the right paints. Only thing is they don't include primer paint.

Rather than buy the whole set which incorporates colours you may not need for the Sovereign (such as yellow ochre), you can to buy the exact same paint as individual pots via CMB

Cheers Mr T, unfortunately we don't know all the colours we're going to need - do you know if Deagostini provide a list somewhere?

However I get the feeling that even if you exclude a few of the paints from the HMS Victory set and buy them individually at a couple of pounds per colour, (not to mention delivery) may prove more expensive than the set offered by Deagostini?

I'm tempted to buy an art set with a load of colours, but they may not be the correct shade.

Can you recommend a primer that we should be using? i.e. Clear / grey, or will any suffice? I have grey spray primer for the car - would that work, or should I be trying to track down clear wood primer - any assistance would be gratefully received.

I've read your posts to date and have given me the confidence to have a go at this. It seems a fascinating hobby, albeit an expensive one at £800 in total for all the issues - but hopefully for something that'll keep me engaged for over 2 years, that can't be bad!

I generally use any good undercoat that is available such as the car type you have mentioned,what you need to ensure is that its an acrylic type of paint as you can get problems if its a celulose based undercoat,the acrylic will or can bubble up as the celulose gasses leach out of the undercoat. So to put it in a nutshell,Acrylic undercoat and top coat = good, Celulose and Celulose = good, Celulose and Acrylic = bad,Hope this is of help

There is no paint list available, and its looking like the step information will just describe basic colours such as red, rather than noting a shade or paint reference.

To be honest your way off needing the bulk of colours other than what is required for the cannon if you are to paint them. thee is also no reason why you cannot opt for other colours if you wish to personalise your model.

For metal parts, a metal primer is best used (aerosol or pot) which is also compatible with the topcoat paint type being used, and similarly for wood, you will need a primer suited to wood or sanding sealer, that again is compatible with the topcoat paint you intend to use.

Wood stain may also be needed but we'll cross that bridge as and when we come to it.

Without repeating what has already been posted up about certain aspects of ship modelling, initially you'll find a wealth of information in this section..

Thanks guys, have looked through the link you specified, together with your comments. But(!), and excuse me as I am a total newbie at this, all these assume acrylic or enamel paint, yet Deagostini are supplying water based paints in their link for the Victory! So would a grey car primer, with water based paint on top work?

I would have thought Deagostini would have provided all this detail (and actually the paints) for an £800 model - I'm sure many of us are in the same boat (excuse the pun!), in wanting to get this looking authentic, but many will be inexperienced and probably never painted a model in our lives! I feel Deagostini should be helping people with this sort of stuff, rather than us having to rely on experts like yourselves to go out your way to help us out (which is greatly appreciated, by the way!)

Maybe they shouldn't advertise these things on prime-time TV if they expect the audience to be experienced modellers.

I must confess, this is starting to put me off big time...

The DeAgostini paints are water based acrylics which can be diluted with water, but become water-resistant when dry. In actual fact this paint is manufactured by a renound model ship kit manufacturer and specifically blended to suit the purpose intended.

The choice you need to make is to use acrylic or enamel or a mix of both depending on purpose and finish.
Ultimately its down to personal choice, certainly acrylics are far easier to use, thin and clean up as its simply water needed, rather than white spirit for enamel purposes, enamel also tend to have a longer dry time.

At this stage I would not get too bogged down with worrying about paint, as there will be lots of member guidance along the way to keep you on the straight and narrow.

If I remeber rightly, the Victory paint set did not come along until a number of weeks after the series was released, the same could well happen for the Sovereign, therefore I'll ask for an update on this.

hi,I think maybe you are worrying too much,my own research has told me that although this is a famous ship,no plans of the original ship are forth coming.the paints are very few,only the shields and figure head will require different colours.the main colours being black red,and gold.the stains,your choice,I'm using walnut stain for the deck fittings,and handrails,canadian cedar stain for main hull and mahogany stain for above the waterline,and white for below the waterline.also as this is 21/2 years plus you will see how other members are tackling the paint job.do read the build diarys of s.o.t.s. btw tomick is the official of de-ag and his build diary makes sure that all build instructions in the mag are correct and will notify us if they are not.

BigGrin Hi m8 acrlyic paint is a water based paint the old modelers enamels by revel and the celulose type ect are oil based paints.To be honest your reading to much into the paint problem as you will be informed in the official build of when and where to use them and also with a build of this type the less paint used will make it look even better[but thats just my opinion],Hope this clears up any doubts you have

Okay, I'll hang fire and not build the cannon in the hope they will provide the detail in a later issue - just don't want to have too many things unbuilt, especially from issue 1. Scared

Lots of ideas will be forthcoming in members build diary's as the weeks progress, where you can pick and choose the route you want to take, for instance Karl has opted to paint his gun barrels gold rather than bronze.

Rob T, You are free to finish your model how you prefer, and therefore end up with a personal item that is pleasing to you as many did with the Victory.
