Hi everyone I am Bren from ireland and I have just subscribed to SOTS. I have made tonnes of plastic kit models as a kid etc but am entering this hobby for the first time. Fourty now so hopefully something to take me into old age. I hope that I can make a few friends here as all good advise would be appreciated as help will be required I am sure. Has anyone subscribed to anything like this before and gone the distance ? Two and a half years seems like a long time and if they have will the completed model be as good as advertised assuming I have the skills to complete it.One does worry a little when you read the latest stories in the daily mail etc. Anyhow I suppose I am looking for someone to give me the thumbs up.

hi neon,welcome to the forum,as for going the distance have a look at the victory build diaries,they are just coming to an end  plenty of help here,just holla',it is a very steep learning curve,but with patience and dedication you can do it,also have a look at the tools section,you will need tools that you don't use on plastic kits.most important you will need a jig to mount the keel and formers.good luck and enjoy. Cheers mate thanks for the reply.
I intend doing this as the issues come and a great excuse to lock myself in a room away from the kids. Model building is not very big in ireland apart from plastic kits so its the tool thing that worries me. Availability and advise would not be available in ireland so thats why I signed up here. Also I am a little worried that I will have to hand out more money for tools then for the ship !!! or so the wife is suggesting.

New to this Forum, but not to boat building or other models, I guess this is going to be about my 6th Boat. Just to reassure you there are tools you will need and tools that help but are not essential and don't forget you get quite a few free with the subscription. The rest you can get on ebay for next to nothing. I tend to find it more satisfying using hand-tools. Oh and start pinching the wife's pins. Also Iss 3 shows you how to make a jig which I'm going to do even though I've got a commercial one. It's just fun to make stuff.

Cheers court thats very helpful advise. In fairness You would assume that following the magazines will help you do the job perfectly. It would not be in their interest to have you buying loads of expensive tools because you might cancel your subscription. I am very excited about getting going now and I think the best advise is just follow the mags and listen to good advise from people like your good self.

hello to neon, gus and court orchard. as c.o. says don't worry about buying loads of tools, when i built my first ever boat, all i had was a swiss army knife, a stanley knife and a toffee hammer. however there is a draper tool kit which i bought, it has a couple of craft knife handles, a razor saw, mitre block and sander, it only costs a tenner or so, it's on e-bay and other sites. so again welcome and enjoy your builds, i look forward to seeing the diaries. Welcome to the forum neon, I wouldn't take much notice of what daily rags had to say, because you'll find that they surface every year in running a similar story with the latest release whatever it might be. Hi Neon A warm welcome to the forum, tools now thats a can of worms. I know people who have shed loads and just stick to there favorite knife,razor saw and ruler and when confronted about the plethora of tools nestling in there boxes you get the knowing look and the reply 'well you never know when they will come in handy'. If you take a look at MGW's build diary he has put up a list of tools that should get you through the model to compleation regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks Mike. I'm sure I will, feels good to be part of a community build, rather than my usual lonesome builds. Well, apart from blank stares from the Missus, that is.
