 Hi all I'M Rob and i have never built a thing in my life but i am going to try the sovereign and just take it steady but can someone please tell me wether to use enamel or acrylic' i have herd that i do not need primer with enamel is this true?

Hi Rob. Welcome to the forum  . Acrylic washes out with water and enamel washes out in white spirit. Myself i use acrylic. It all depends what you prefer. Myself i would always use primer. Hope this helps you. Best regards. Mark

Hi Tomick,
The detail on those cannons are very well done. As per a previous post of yours, I take it you used Tamiya X-33 bronze, what did you use for the highlights? Secondly, did you also use a primer coat?
I plan to order these materials over the next few days and will then get started.

Hi Andy,
The highlights are dry brushed with a lighter shade of the base colour used for the gun barrel, this is purely a suggestion for what can be acheived, though many may not wish to go to this exctent and simply paint the gun barrel and leave as is which is reflected in the magazine build (which my build diary follows as being a basic version).
Ensure your primer is not applied to thickly as you may loose the crisp ornate detail upon the barrel.

I've read elsewhere that some people put a thin coat of red on before the bronze. What are the advantages of this? Also, is the clear matt overcoat also a Tamiya paint.

Quite true, ultimately its down to experimentation and ending up with the desired effect you want.
In the coming weeks you'll likely see a lot of varying ideas of how such as cannon are finished, and I wouldn't rush into it at this stage simply becuase you have along way to go before any cannon will be placed into the model, and you might change your mind after seeing other ideas.
Tamiya do a matt aerosol and also a pot equivalent, which is pretty much the same across all model paint supliers, its just a case of using what you prefer.

It's quite difficult to see the finishes accurately through a monitor due to vast differences in PC technology and monitor calibration.
I may have a look around for a piece of scrap metal to try various finishes on to see what I prefer.

The matt overcoat. Is that another Tamiya product? Clear flat matt acrylic?

Its a steep learning curve if you have not done this sort of thing before, and it might be an idea to hone some basic skills on an easier/smaller build before setting to work on your pride and joy., having said that, there is lots of help and guidance on the forum to keep you on track, the main thing is to build at your own pace, as its not a race.

hi there im using tamiya x33 bronze for cannon & there flat red paint tamiya bronze looks good not to light on the bench soverign of the seas & hms hood , collecting hms victory
