Hello Steve,

It is the Standard Colour Matching System for Europe by which all commercial paints are mixed to get them exacty the same each time they are mixed or at least as close as makes no difference to the capabilities of the human Mk.1 eyeball!!

It is the way to go if you want to paint your models in exactly the same colour as the paint on the original full size machine!!

Those familiar with Hachette's Bismarck and Hood series will be familiar with RAL numbers as, as its what they provide for the paint shades,also industrial colours are generally specified as a RAL number.
