I have had the great honour of crewing one of these magnificent yachts many years ago, designed by Johan Ankers & built by Ankers & Jensen in Norway originally in the mid twenties. They are a thing of beauty & power,in my opinion the only yachts that look better are the old J class boats. It was an experience & a half! There was some photos of me on board but unfortunately over the years & moves they have disappeared like so many other memories committed to film. When they were first built they were supposed to be a cheaper way for young people to sail & cruise.....but only the upper crust of course! I know they appeared in the 1st post-war olympics & I believe Munich was the last...so that makes that 1972? Wether they were an olympic class pre war I don't know, the one I crewed on was built in the 1930's on the Clyde, one of the first Dragon class boats to be made in Britain. The owner actually bought her in the states shipped her back home & had her restored before using her in races 4 of which I was a crew member in,that would have been 1979 & I was not quite 15 at the time...hell of an experience at any age...I was very lucky that most people in the sailing club who crewed for other people had already started their seasons when she came out from being restored.
