Hi Mike, excellent posts as usual, it's all appreciated. I too would like to pack out the hull with balsa as I think this will aid in the shaping process prior to tackling the planking as well as giving the hull extra strength. Can I ask however, will you be giving us Newbies an idea as to the amount and size of balsa wood we will need to order to do the job and do you know of a place online where it can be ordered....

Now about to tackle issue 3... thanks again...

Hi GD, thank you for your comments, I will be covering the fitting of Balsa infills when the ribs have been fitted, and giving sizes etc.

You are right the Balsa aides the fitting of the planksCool Regards Mike

BALSA INFILLS (BOW PART No 2)

Hi Team, its time for me to start using balsa wood, to strengthen the Bow formers.
Its something I prefer to do (you do not need to)with all my ship builds.

STEP 1 cut the first pieces of Balsa (these are 10mm thick):-

BALSA INFILLS

STEP 2

I now measure and cut two more infills (these are 6 mm thick) I used two pieces of 3 mm thick from some offcuts I had:-

BALSA INFILLS

STEP 3

Please make sure if you decide to do this, you do not fill the centre slot because judgeing by the hole at the middle of part 2 the bow sprit will be fitted here, plus there is a slot at the bottem where we are going to fit another part.

I will add two more infills of 10 mm thick when I have fitted bow formers 12 in another issue.

Well thats all for now,BigGrin Questions and comments welcome, I will leave you with a photo of the balsa roughly shaped at this point.:-

Regards Mike

And I think that I will use the Balsa for my next Ship too
It looks much easier to plank, and to get a better rounding ThumpUp
Kind regards

Thanks Mike, exactly what I wanted to see... Went out and got balsa today and have packed between the bow formers... quite please with the results so far... Have also decided to attempt my first diary, managed to upload two photo's, quality not great but that will improve.. Just trying to work out how to display the images as a post rather than a download..... Great work as usual Mike....

Hi Mike...I think that packing balsa along the entire length is the way to go on this build, always packed bow and stern but the whole length is going to be a first for me this time around!! Keep up the good work mate!!

Hi Mike,
I've never used Balsa before, but it seems like a good way to go. Not sure my pocket is deep enough (@ the prices in my local shop) or my sanding arm tough enough, to Balsa the whole Hull though. Excellent posts, as usual, thanks for all the food for thought.

Hi Mike,
That doesn't sound bad at all for price and quantity, what width is that? The local Shop wanted £5 for a piece 10mm x 500mm x 100mm, and I thought I am going to need a lot of those. I shall look further afield. Thanks for the info.
