To my fellow ship builders, particularly to people new to modelling. I have seen posts from shipmates asking about `Jigs` (NOT A DANCE) and how to purchase or make one. What I am going to show and explain to you is not my invention, lots of people in this forum over the last 15 months have shown photos and details of what I am going to show you, but theirs have got lost now in the archives of many threads, I am just going to, "dig them up" so to speak,so here goes. Over 50 years ago when I built my first ship my father showed me how to lay the Keel, and I am sure many modellers today had the same information passed to them either from their father or a friend, so what I am going to show you is not new,but cheap and effective, I call it my DRY DOCK. 1)Buy or beg a length of timber, seasoned and not twisted, approx 8 inches wide by the length of your Ship. 2)Purchace 10 to 14 angle brackets approx 50 mm and some screws. Now draw a line down the centre of the plank, take the thickness of your ships Keel and position the angle brackets in pairs either side off the line. ( you will see this in the photos ) "why would I use a Dry dock", It allows you to lay the Keel of you ship so it will not twist or distort while you are building. The photos attached should tell the story but if you need more info anyone one the forum including myself will help you. The photo with out a ship is the dry dock I used for the Victory and the Endeavour. The last Photo is the Cutty Sark, which has had its Keel laid for 8 months, and is still straight and true.( I will carry on the build soon) thank you for looking MWG attached the following image(s): MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.

Some members have PM`d me to ask if the Dry Dock can be used for other builds, yes it can, you still have the centre line, all you need to do is adjust the brackets to suite the new Keel. The Build stand which comes as a "freeby" with the Endeavour Partwork is not very good, I am working on a simple modification for us all to use (That is all the Endeavour Builders.) Brackets are cheaper at Wilkinson's if there is one near you. I also found I had to chuck my B&Q brackets as they were not 90 degrees angles. worth checking. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Once you have added the hull planking this type of Jig becomes redundant and you are left with that provided with the kit. I found that for some of the tasks this was not suitable so i devised a jig which presented the hull to me at a 45 degree angle. I have posted this before and received some posiive feedback so here it is again as some time has passed and no doubt the thread is now lost. No copyright involved so feel free to build your own GilShapley attached the following image(s): Current Build:- [color=blue]Stash Avro Lancaster (Full Kit)plus some extra issues I picked up at a good price [color=blue]Built:- Norman Catapult by Mantua,Roman Catapult by Mantua,HMS Victory,HMS Victory XSection,Focker DB1,Bismark,English Carronade Titanic Lifeboat,American Civil War Gatling,Hummer,Sopwith Camel F1,Occre Jupiter ,OcCre Wagon, Latina Arab Dhow, Eaglemass Orrery OcCre Rogers 119 [color=red][color=red]RB7,OcCre Missippi River Boat, Model Airways Fokker DR1 OcCre London L>C>C 106 Ugears Scrambler, Ugears Hexapod Explorer UGears Off-Road Vehicle
