Sovereign of the seas
She was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings against a black background, made by John Christmas and Mathias Christmas after a design by Anthony van Dyck. The money spent making her, £65,586 (equal to £9,900,404 today), helped to create the financial crisis for Charles I that contributed to the English Civil War. Charles had imposed a special tax, the 'Ship Money', to make possible such large naval expenditure. The gilding alone cost £6,691 (equal to £1,010,027 today), which in those days was the price of an average warship. She carried 102 bronze cannon (King Charles explicitly ordered such a high number)[4] and was thereby at the time the most powerfully armed ship in the world. The cannon were made by John Browne.

Hi johnny,

Yes I imagine a lot will seem similar possibly and including up to the planking. But from there onwards it will be very different I think. Nice work so far, keep those pictures coming. BigGrin

Thanks for the very nice comments gents...and Craig, I too are looking at an order for balsa, but will wait until I get the full dimensions of the lower hull before purchasing an appropriate amount of balsa to do the job? Happy building!!

Well...We start with issue one. Don't you hate it when it comes in that plastic packaging that with the slightest exposure to a strong light source (sun) or heat source (radiators) there's definitely going to be some warping!! I checked all the parts and found that all was well. This is going to be one heck of a build with extensive bling...Must have stuck out like a sore thumb when at sea???

Now we can start putting her together beginning with the bow formers. After giving each part a gentle sanding and removing the char marks caused by the laser cutting in production. (I used ladies nail filing boards) Arrange each part in order of assembly, also checking for any evidence of warpage no matter how slight as it could ruin the completed section.

Hi there shipmates...Yet another week had passed and issue 4 was collected from the newsagent on Wednesday. I was not ready to make a start on it until later on in the weekend, but after reading a posting yesterday about faulty parts in issue 4...I just had to check my issue parts and found to my relief that my parts 13a and 13b were okay.

I have turned my attention to the cannon, and a few other small items like the anchor ect...But first I had to consider a way of keeping all the parts together for use when I needed them, then I discovered that I could gently insert the point of my modelling knife into the top layer of plastic packaging, cut around the part needed and extracting it with tweezers leaving the other compartments sealed so that the other parts could not get lost?
