hi aldo,15mm. thick is best,b & q. I found best,it had all the materials required, and they will cut the wood if necessary.12"(30cm.) the best all round size is 1mtr. x 30mm.wide and 15-20mm thick.with 6" (10.5cm.)brackets. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

I picked up a pine shelf from wickes for approx £8 which was ideal size for the jig base. For brackets, I am using corner reinforcements which are approx £4 for 4 at b&q. Plywood came from b&q also. The only problem there is that they do 6mm thickness and not 5mm... Having the large sheet cut into 3 smaller ones was definitely a plus I''ll be starting a build diary soon as I now have a clear work space and will include pictures of my jig at the start of it Andy Current Builds: - HMS Sovereign of the Seas Planning on Building: - Scratch built HMS Victory full detail interior (I know what's inside even if you can't see it ) Completed Builds: -

I have also struggled to get suitable wood. Don't drive and live in Swindon so a double problem. Resorted to the Internet and got my ply from w hobby ltd http://hobby.uk.com/cata...d+panel&x=0&y=0
Part number P12 was the ply I ordered as its 4mm thick. Panels are really flat and clean so happy with my purchase. My shelf (ordered 2) were delivered from wickes at no more cost than a return taxi ride. http://m.wickes.co.uk/mt.../165068?un_jtt_redirect
Hope this might help Kind regards Tony W Hobby catalogue available in WH Smiths and has some very good items in it Happy Modelling

That should be fine, the important thing is that it is totally flat.

Awesome! but for the brackets, doesnt it say 3 slightly larger than 3? So what brackets would do?!

For my 5mm ply i went to the local scrap yard and got lots for free from a van interior lining, also found some on a bonfire pile in a bed base but the rain got there first, salvaged my brackets from same pile reclaimed from a wardrobe. Theres lots of useful bits around for free, wifes nail files are great for getting in the tight spots along with her tweezers, all my files are kept in a cleaned bean can,take-away food containers/coffee jars etc for storage Tell me the truth,I shall not offend nor be offended

Wife's tweezers and nail files free? There will be a cost to that when she finds out I'm finding the little plastic cannon packets perfect for dispensing small amounts of glue & paint. It's amazing what some people throw away, if you keep your eyes open.

She was fine with the tweezers and files,it was the built-in vanity table i made her and completed just in time to use as my build space that really upset her Question:said space is built-in to the alcove aside the chimney breast so is walled in on 3 sides, measures 1240mm x 380mm so its gonna be snug and i cant work 360deg around the model,is this going to be workable as i progress? Tell me the truth,I shall not offend nor be offended

Hi, You are going to need to turn the model frequently when planking or rigging for example. I use a rotating platter, it came with a cheese set from a cheap cook shop. This is because you need to do some of the building in a balanced way to avoid too much force all on one side.
