Hi, is primer absolutely necessary for a good finish as im struggling to find a shop local to me that sells it as im not one for shopping on the internet. I'm using acrylic paints if that makes any difference to the answer.

It is on metal parts if you do not want the paint to easily scratch or flake off. Have you tried such as B&Q, a hardware store or even a model shop?

Have tried b&q with no luck and modelzone local to me with no joy. Isn't primer from a hardware store going to be too thick?

There's a Games workshop in Derby where you can buy the Citadel Black spray primer and the Toy-master near us sell it too. It's what I use.

i use basic carplan spray primer from my local garage, it's worked ok on my victory, san fransico2 and other models with metal parts. corwall model boats have a metal primer, which as it's in the same section as the acrylic paints i would assume its ok for acrylics. Come on you Jimmies

If it is on the metal parts then "Red Oxide" primer from Halfords is good.. I know I go on about there sprays but I'm sure most will agree they are very good with Grey and white and even yellow primer.. they even do a flexible primer (for bumpers) Spence

Hi,
Have you tried Halfords?
I use their grey primer for plastic parts, works a treat. Nice thin even coat.
Doesn't cover up detail either, I use it on most of my plastic model kits & it also works well on sealed wood.

I think im going to get some in Games Workshop.
(they have everything for warhammer meta/plastics and some wood accessories)
Or check ebay?

Remember when using different types of paint, you can get a messy reaction. You can paint acrylic over cellulose (Carplan primer etc), but you cannot paint cellulose over acrylic as it bubbles up and cracks! Model boats built so far:-

I use upol acid etch primer from halfords on metals.Its about £12 for a big aerosol but lasts for absolutely ages and can be overpainted with anything.Normal paints can flake off after time.

Hi guys,my cannon paints arrived today but i over-looked metal primer. In the basement i found a couple of cans i wonder if they are suitable,i have cold zinc galvanise spray wich being a steel fabricator i use every week with good results but nothing as fine as the cannons,and matt black car spray wich claims to need no undercoat. Hi Hector the zinc spray may be on the heavy side and fill in details on the cannon also i think it may be celulose based and not an acrylic/water based spray i would go for either any halfords spray primer of any good motor factor shop primer like car plan.You can sometimes get a bad reaction if you try and mix celulose paints and acrylics so try and get an acyrlic based undercoat that will go with the acrylic paints you have regards Andy  Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I hope this helps but i use Halfords own primer in a spray can i also have the clear lacquer from them and it works ok for me Paul
