So im wanting to stain the decks, the rails, doors and a majority of the hull what is the best stain to get? and where can i get it from?
I realy cant find anywhere that sells it?!?

Any DIY shop, or B&Q, Homebase etc. Or even EBay.

hi extinctionjet, I'm amazed that you haven't found wood stain,maybe you was blinded by the choice in b& Q.???if you take a look at this pic it will give you some Idea of what can be done with woodstain.  the stains used are these,colron american walnut,canadian cedar,dark oak, the effect of the hull was to look old and used,was achieved by first using dark oak,then sanded back the canadian cedar,american walnut was used on the gunwales.and interior. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi Karl, you say first using the dark oak then sanded back the canadian cedar? can you explain that please? is it 1 coat of cedar, then dark oak then sand down parts of it to reveal the cedar?
Also, what colour would you sugest to stain the Canon bodies? for a old yet detailed look.. :) thanks!

dark oak was used first,then sanded back with 120 wet & dry,then then cedar was applied.as for the cannon trucks,you can just apply dark oak and then rub down to what you think looks right then varnish satin. Hi All, I haven't posted lately but am always enjoying the banter and questions etc. Regarding the wood stains has anyone any experience using printer ink? I have bottles of cyan magenta yellow and black from my refill cartridge days and wonder if they stain/soak in ok and do they take varnish? Just interested. cheers Peter completed..... Your best bet would be to take the spare wood surrounding the parts for issue 4 onwards and do a few tests with the ink/varnish and see what happens. I doubt anyone on the forum has attempted to colour their models in such a way... oooo Sillvestra,you have put your foot right in it,check mwg endeavour,and zeptraders victory,both have used inks for colouring wood,on my vic build diary you will find I used printer ink for the deadeyes,it pays to look at other build diary's there a world of tips and experience on show,all you have to do is look and it's FREE. Hi Catman the only problem i can see with using printer ink is its not a permament pigment ie it will fade over time if direct sunlight is allowed to shine on the dyed parts,the range of inks by rowney such as used by MWG on his Endeavor build might be a better bet for colour fastness regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi Andy, Interesting to hear that. I do prefer the natural wood look when building my models. I have used stain on occasions but at the moment I am building the Royal Caroline and the upper outer hull is blue. I think I need to have the blue to show up the brass fitting to their best. The inner bulwarks are a red, well I am going to stain them dark oak or even look for a red type veneer strip. I am am still tossing ideas around in my head while finishing off the first planking, so I am open to all suggestions at this point. Cheers to all Peter completed..... Always happy to be proved wrong  just thought that printer inks may have been a highly unusual choice for most modelers to use Just too many good builds out there in the forum pages and too little time to look at them all... I'm finding so many good ideas that I want to include or modify that my bookmark folder for build ideas is chockablock... Hi Catman The rowney artist inks come in a plethora of colours and give an opaque finish so the grain of the wood is shown in all its glory,what i would advise is if you use the above to practice on some scrap 1st so a uniform coverage is obtained,i think if you wet the wood 1st it helps with the flow of the ink and cuts down brush marks.Hope this helps regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
