Im curious if anyone knows where its possible to buy some 1/84 scale cannons for sovereign of the seas. I noticed in the Victory they give you the tip of cannons to glue into some beams, Im not sure but from the pictures it seems it will be the same for the sovereign, personally i want to make the full lower decks and the cannons.. Im a bit of a detail freak  They wouldn't have to be exact copies, simply 1/84 scale cannons. Processing - Progressing

well your going to have to do some changes here,the lower decks will probably be blanked off,have you had a look at the victory builds?and what happens if you knock one of the cannons????how you going to get it??? Mmmm, don't see the point in hidden detail. It's better to spend your time and money on the things you (and others) can see.

You guys have a point and i have thought on it, but at this stage its just an idea, though if i do go along with it im just wondering if its even possible to buy the cannons, ive seen it done in a build of the victory and it looked amazing. Processing - Progressing

If anybody is going to fit a full cannon on lower decks a little tip I use is to drill a hole through the carraige bottom panel and fit a cocktail stick in. Then drill a corresponding hole in the deck. The gun wont move then and the fixing is invisible.

Yes I was thinking same way, I am not that keen on half canons. You could take a moulding of the canons you have and cast as many as you need with modelling metal then make the trucks your self as they don't have to be exact. The problem is with decks strength for the planking you can put temporary decks or beams in place. The pinning of the canons trucks is a good idea but it might be better to also tie the the barrels together with a strip of wood or cover them with something to protect them while build up the decks and fit the lighting runs if that's your plan. Thanks court, i've had a look at those and few others but they don't seem to mention the quantity, surely it cant be one for that price.. but i wouldn't be too surprised. If possibly (I've never done it before) but i'd probably go with sandy's idea and make a mould, they wouldn't have to be TOP quality just something you could tell is a cannon, probably not rig them but then again i wouldn't really mind. i love the little details. Hi AAS, The Caldercraft/Jokita ones are good quality and are supplied in pairs. You could just buy the Barrels and scratch build the Carriages. But it's going to be a couple of hundred pounds even that way. Beware of resin, my 'Harvey' Resin Cannon Barrels have distorted over the years. Still it's great fun considering all the open possibilities at this early stage.

With consideration towards internally lit models, half details or half cannons aren't really an option... May have to resort to invading the local newsagents for their extra copies with cannons... Hi Mike, Just wondering why? Particularly since the build has red painted carriages and therefore the wood doesn't matter. Unless you are thinking of having a natural wood finish, but this doesn't fit with the ornamented style of the SOTS and is more fitting with the later utilitarian 18th/19th century armaments as proposed by Mueller in 1756, when he wrote a paper on the uselessness of ornamental guns.

Hello, Moulding your own barrels isn't all that hard to do, because of the detail on the Sovereign's barrels I'd recommend using Prince August casting metal as it will capture the detail better than standard resin. Fair enough Mike, those Caldercraft Cannon Kits are very nice. Just a minor point though, the gun carriages were usually made of Elm, as it had a stronger resistance to splintering under impact, also Sephton says that iron axle trees were used. I have used acrylic ink on my carriages and found that 2 coats gave a sufficiently dark shade for my liking. I have remade the Anchor stock in Walnut for the reasons you mention. It's going to be a major part of the enjoyment of this build seeing other ideas and discussing all the possible options
