STAGE 3 BALSA INFILL

Hi again Team, this is the third part of the tutorial.

For the sides we will use 1/2 x 4 inches - plus a little 1/4 inch left over pieces to laminate, then to fix them into the last but one gap between the ribs ( please note lots of photos )Let us do them first, please do not forget to measure between the ribs (a nice snug fit always no forcing ):-

Now we also need to laminate 2 pieces per side of 1/2 balsa for the space next to the Bow the next picture will show you where:-

Hi Jethro, you can use any medium you are comfortable with, also you can leave it out all together, but balsa fits the bill in all departments;-

It is strong and so it will tie all the ribs together so they will not move.
When you sand it smooth you fair the Hull at the same time, and so the planks fit more accurately.

STAGE 3 BALSA INFILL

Hi Team here is the 4th session, in the Tutorial, next will be the last session sanding the Balsa into the final Hull shape.

But for now lets remind ourselves some important points for this session:-

Please do not rush.
Remember to leave spaces to accomadate the brackets.
Do not cut yourself with the Razor saw
Where possible use offcuts and scrap pieces of Balsa it is expensive so use all you can.

Ok here we go, cut the side uprights you fitted last time down to the rib, following the angle of the rib BUT NOT TO CLOSE here are the photos:-

STAGE 3 BALSA INFILL

All the pieces you have cut off we are now going to use them by inverting them, fixing them with PVA inside, on the out side edge (you may have to sand the sides a little to get a nice snug fit) this is forming our support brackets for when we fit the base pieces (fit them so you have approx 1/2 inch clearance):-

Hello Mike,

I don't do the ship modelling as you know (will have a go at some point) but I do love following your work mate. Your balsa method isn't new to me as I've seen you use it on quite a few of your builds but I just wanted to say that it seems to work very well every single time and is fast becoming THE way to go on these wooden ships and most definitely seems to make the planking process half as difficult (at least) as it was before?? If and when I get round to doing one of these, I will most certainly be using your methods!!

Top work Mike and look forward to continuing with watching your builds. Even if I don't post comment too often I am always watching the master at work!! Well done. Cool Cool

All the best,

Kev BigGrin
