Tomick wrote:Indeed the model is double planked, the first layer being of 2 x 5mm bamboo which starts at issue 17, with the planking of the gallery and the first hull plank laid, and the second layer being a 1.5 x 5mm Sapele veneer plank. Sapele is a nice wood and Bamboo is new to me, I guess it bends well . Interesting information, thanks Mr T.

Considering I have never worked with any kind of wood before I wouldn't be able to say whether Sapele or Bamboo are nice woods to work with... should be interesting to say the least and looking forward to the challenge.... Issue 8 collected from the newagents so time to get down to some building... this is the parts received... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Made a start by carefully cutting the jig for the launch free from the fret... Took the 3 x 3mm strip and cut into two equal lengths of 125mm. Gandale attached the following image(s):
Placing the launch jig face down glued the 3 x 3mm to either side. Placed the completed part into my glass press, weighed down with a heavy vase to ensure it set flat.. Gandale attached the following image(s):

While the launch jig was drying, decided to continue with the balsa infills, setting in place the next two balsa block ensuring everything was still flat and level... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finally in this part, I carefully measured the remaining gaps between the ribs and cut top pieces of the box fills from 6.5mm balsa. Also cut areas out to accommodate the mast sockets... Gandale attached the following image(s):

More to follow later... happy building all and thanks for looking in....

With the launch jig set it was now time to do some more work on the launch hull... Realising the launch pieces were very delicate, carefully cut the pieces free from the fret and gently cleaned off any loose ash.. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Made up the bow section and glued in place, continued to glue in place the remainingg ribs ensuring they were set at right angles to the jig... Gently filed hole 15 on the jig to allow for part 15 to slope and set against part 14.... Set the whole lot aside to dry. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Have now completed and fitted in place the top sections of the balsa box infills and am happy everything is still level, true and with no twists... Hopefully make a start on measuring and cutting the side sections later today... Forget the final rib in the photo, that is a spare faulty part that is just sitting there, it will be removed when parts 26 and 27 arrive... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Continued tonight on cutting and fitting the first part of the side sections as per MWG's tutorial.... My only concern now that the ship is out of the jig is introducing any kind of twist or warp.. if that were to happen now, I think because of the effort I have put in to ensuring everything is straight and true it would be so demoralising I think I would throw the lot in the bin and give up as a bad experience.... Just now, am confident all is going well.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi Alan, you have fitted the deck balsa if your measurements are spot on she will not twist. Tomorrow cut the side pieces and invert the cut off pieces then put her back in the jig all should be good Your work is looking first class Regards Mike MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.
