Well have now finished the rough sanding and fairing of the hull.... will complete the task with some filler and final fine sanding... Hope I have shaped the stern section correctly, no doubt will find out when we get down to the planking. Will probably start with the filler and fine sand tomorrow. A long task but one well worth doing.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Picked up issue 10 from the newagents today and was hoping to do some work on the old girl tonight but disappointingly, when I inspected the parts found they were quite badly warped, think the last image shows what I found. So without cutting anything from the fret, have now placed the parts in hot water to soak and will then place them in my glass press under weight. Hopefully they will dry and flat enough to carry on working on her this weekend. Here are the parts I received. Gandale attached the following image(s):

The one thing I was able to do this evening was to repair the hole in the balsa infill on one of the forward sections. I did this by following the instructions on MWG's tutorial, post number 300.. Have to say the repair isn't noticeable... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Thanks for the nice comment Mark.... it is a pity about the warped parts but we have all had to deal with them at some time or other.... putting it down to the experience of the build.....  Alan

Know what you mean about the Vic. one day i'll go for the Caldercraft Kit, but it's pushing £800.  But the SOTS is quite exciting, it's a fairly untraveled road, every man and his dog has done the Vic, but I think we've got the chance of doing something new here. Must have more water with my Whisky.

Having looked at the pictures of the finished artical I have to say I am not too keen on the white hull.... am thinking of doing the 2nd layer of the lower hull in walnut.... will probably make that decision when I see what Deagostini provide and whether I have the skill necessary to get away with finishing in walnut..... Does anyone else have similar thoughts?????

Have a look at the Italian forum. They are up to issue 40 or 50. You can get a good idea of where things are going. For example you can see that there's a lot of extra stuff going onto the stern. So it's wise to stay away from any Balsa there. As regards Walnut it's just the same as any other wood in terms of workability.

Was thinking of walnut more for the look rather than workability,,, just don't like the white hull, think it looks out of place on a ship such as this..... find it hard to believe hulls were white in those days.....

Have just spent some time fairing the hull of the launch and have to say it is not the easiest thing to do, not because the task is difficult but because the ribs are just so so delicate.... have to take it very slowly and easily or else they will break..... Anybody have easier ways to do it?

Hi Alan, Where's all that Balsa when you need it  But seriously, what I do when I want to sand away something very delicate, is I use my Dremel with it's flexi-drive and a SiC paper disc. This removes material without putting any force on it. But care is needed obviously, I'm about to do this with my Launch.

I personally keep powertools well away from the delicate work,I'm much to clumsy,I use sandpaper on a piece of planking,several grades,and fair very gently,takes about an hour or so.also have dowel stick with stuck on sandpaper for the curved bits. Thanks Andy, typical isn't it, balsa is never around when you need it the most.... . I too have the Dremel with a felxi-drive but not sure I want to put it anywhere near the build..... will do some practice work on some scrap wood first and see how it goes from there... looking forward to seeing your launch and will be publishing pics of mine real soon....
