Hello all,

As the Formula 1 Quiz seems to be fairly popular, I thought it might be a good idea and quite good fun to also start a little quiz in the Military Forum? I hope that you will find it interesting and feel the need to take part even if you don't normally post in the Military sections as this is open to anybody on the ModelSpace Forums regardless of any modelling interest?

** PLEASE NOTE ** - There are NO prizes on offer, it's just for fun and there's only a handful of simple rules:

RULES

All questions must be of a 'Military' nature and subjects can include anything to do with ANY branch of the Armed Forces (Land, Sea or Air) from ANY nation. They can also be about ANY conflict from ANY period in the history of warfare, so a huge amount to go at peeps!!

Whoever posts the correct answer to any question, then gets to post the next question, but ONLY after their answer has been accepted as correct by the person who posted the original question.

IF AFTER 48 HOURS NO FOLLOW UP QUESTION IS POSTED BY THE PERSON WHO GAVE THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THE PREVIOUS ONE, THEN A MEMBER OF THE FORUM SUPORT TEAM WILL TAKE THE STEP OF SETTING ANOTHER QUESTION BY PROXY AND THE PERSON WHO HAD THE OPTION WILL THUS MISS THEIR GO. LIKEWISE, IF ANYONE SETS A QUESTION BUT THEN FAILS TO GIVE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT AN ANSWER TO THEIR QUESTION IS EITHER CORRECT OR INCORRECT, THEN AGAIN, AS OVERSEER OF THE QUIZ, THE FST WILL SET A NEW QUESTION BY PROXY.

This is purely to keep the quiz flowing and maintain the fun and interest.

If there is any disagreement by third parties over whether an answer that has been accepted as correct by the questions' author, is in fact wrong, then the author of the original question must mediate and decide on whether they should uphold their original judgement or accept the new answer as being correct. Whatever he/she decides is final and we move on to the next question. NO WW3 PLEASE - it's just for fun!!

Please try to keep any posts as being questions or answers - no idle chitchat unless it is relevant to a question or answer.

To reiterate - This is just for fun and entertainment, nothing else, so please keep it lighthearted and friendly peeps!!

I will start it off by asking the first question in the next post.

What type of weapon was a 'Nebelwerfer' and what TWO nicknames did the Allied Forces give to it during the Sicily campaign of WWII because of the sound that it made when fired?

Good Idea.

Nebelwerfer was a rocket launcher, also know as wailing Winnie, Moaning Minnie & Sobbing Sisters.

Hello Wilfy,

Correct on the type of weapon and 'Moaning Minnie' was indeed ONE of the nicknames I was after, but unfortunately, you haven't included the second one that I wanted!

The other two that you give were definitely used during WWII I agree, but the second one that I want was used during the Sicily campaign in particular!!BigGrin

So not quite correct I'm afraid!!Flapper

It was a battle that seems to get forgotten..but it was the Battle of Le Cateau.
(My history teacher was a WW1 fanatic & drummed everything he could into us,I have still got the pile of paper that resulted from it...couple of trees worth!)

Submarines have been around for a lot longer than people realise,it has been suggested that Alexander the Great made use of a primitive type for reconaisance.
When did the first documented military submarine make an appearance & what was it used for?

Hi!
That was the "Rotterdam Ship", build in 1653 by a French man named "De Son" in the netherlands to destroy british ships by ramming.
