FITTING THE GALLERY ENHANCEMENT

PAINTING AND FINISHING

Thats the first coat of black painted on the outward piece of ply.
Now I am going to paint all the windows on the inward piece of ply, this will only display the windows through the outward piece of ply (and your painting does not have to be perfect on this piece because it will not be seen), giving a 3 dimensional effect when fitted with the brass etch.

Here are all the pieces with one coat of paint:-

PAINTING AND FINISHING

Now is the time to mask the outward pieces of ply ( both Stern and side parts), for we are going to paint yellow ochre around the windows. (as per the PDF instructions supplied)

I am using Tamiya masking tape, this is the first stage:-

PAINTING AND FINISHING

To finish off this session, I would like to introduce you to a product which is a PVA based product but it dries clear it is called MICRO KRISTAL KLEAR. I have decided not to fit the clear acetate to form the windows, but to use MKK to make the windows.

All you need is the product a coctail stick and you are all set, when you first apply it, it is white just like PVA then when it dries it is clear and seamless.

Have a look:-

@Mark

I believe it`s none of them - these are various types of varnish.

This is a link to the official site of Humbrol:

http://www.humbrol.com/a...l-application-products/

But i´m afraid they are out of stock :(

P.S.: You can try ebay.
Greetings,
Walter

Its made by Microscale so a search on a certain auction site for Microscale Kristal Klear will find it, its not expensive however the postage is almost as much as the product.

Mike,

Nice find and looking very good, any idea how the stuff ages at all ?

Hi Walter, thank you for your apologey,it is accepted.

Now regarding the making of the Gallery Enhancement windows, there are 2 products that I have used to test the production of windows, clearfix by Humbrol (you already have that on order) it works well but my wife has a breathing disorder, and as this product is solvent based I voted against it, if you remember when we were kids making model aircraft it gives off vapours like dope.

The product I prefere because it is a more natural product is:-

MICROSCALE MICRO KRISTAL KLEAR, it is made in the USA, you can buy it on Ebay.

The drying time depends on the thickness applied (from 15mins)

As regards the life of the product, difficult to say but PVA adhesive lasts along time, all I can say if it ever needs touching up it is accessableBigGrin I have included some photos:-
Kind regards Mike

PS Thanks Mark2,Bam,DJS and Andy for your nice commentsBigGrin

Mike

This is the first time i have looked at your victory build. Looking great as we have come to expect from your work. I have missed all the conversations about the Gallery enhancement but i am thinking of doing the same for my San Juan Nepomuceno when i get round to starting it. Due to the nature of my work i can do the CAD drawings for this and there are a few guys at my University that are willing to laser cut it for me, so all of your tips are a great help for the future.
Cheers
Peter

Hi everyone
Mike recommended that 'Kristal Clear' to me soon after I purchased the gallery enhancement and I can truly endorse the stuff. It really is quite magic, both in the way its applied, where it starts out looking just like glue, but as it cures it becomes exactly what it says on the bottle. When its dry, then the magic shows, the windows look just as though they really have had panes of glass inserted and even have the look of the old glass, you know, the sort with the uneven thickness and bubbles in it - just like it would have been.
So yes you could say I'm well and truly sold on this one.
Happy building and thanks again MikeBigGrin
