I am a bit further on again.

I have made a crude lathe, seems to work ok. I have been doing the second section to the front mast. I found it was easier to sand the taper on the mast, than try to use and wood cutting or shaping tools.

There was also a detail to do around the top section of this mast, It seem's to be a support for the cross trees. again it all worked out ok. It's great what a bit of pva and wood glue can do.

And at the bottom of this section there was an octagonal shape to form before the mastb starts to taper.

I had to buy a new magnifying lamp, but found the base of the old one was good for holding the mast, a kind of dry dock for it.

It was then on to the crosstrees for this area.

She is starting to gain a bit of height now.

Over and Out for now

Can anyone help me with post No 236 on page 12 of this log, I really am struggling to work out what goes where, or in a case like this do I write to customer services.

I have been struggling a bit of late, But I am copying the mast detail on the Victory build, I hope it all works in, The instructions on the Surprise build do not go into the level of detail required, I think they assume the builder will know what to do.

Anyway I have now done the framing to two of the masts, where they come through the foretops. This area is very detailed with cleets and the like,

By the way the tool pictured above is my new best tool.

I think all the above pictures describe what is going on, I only hope it is right, At the end I have added the 2 blocks to the top of this section. I see on the build instruction ( in a picture ) there is a rope to go around this area, But the instruction dont tell me what to do, and I dont know what it is for, can anyone help with this.

thanks Pete, its good to get a bit of feedback. Does the cross ropes at that area serve any purpose, Does it get used as part of the rigging ? Look forward to seeing your pictures.

but its very hard to describe lol. but if you look at my picture below it might explain a bit better.

More problems. I have done the bulwarks to the upper deck, I will post the progress on that later, But I am now finding that the cannons are sitting to high, The capping to the bulwarks goes right over the top of the cannon cut out's, But my cannons are to high to go in to the holes, I have added 2 mm ply to my deck before I did the planking, this has probably not helped, My bulwarks are measuring about 18 mm from deck to top, that is to the top of the bulwarks, not the top of the capping. Can anyone else tell me the size they have, I might have to put another bit of timber on to the bulwarks to get the height required, but if I do that I will have to add the same height to the outside skin.

Any help would be appreciated.

ave you got the barrel wedge in the right way round, I cant quite make out its shape but the fat end should be faceing outwards. Your barrel seems to be sitting at a high angle and should be lying almost level. It might make a difference.

My bulwarks are measuring about 20 mm from deck to the top of the bulwark, 22mm with the capping. A couple of my guns need leveling as they almost touch the underside of the capping.

Its been a while, I am now on the bulwarks to the bow of the boat, I have put masking tape to the deck before I put the first plank on.

had to pin these planks on, to keep them tight to the frames, A couple of the pins came through the face of the boat, will have to nip of and fill and paint.

Again quite happy with it all, Sanded the planks, and gave three coats of Red Ochre paint.

The capping that came with the kit dont fit, I probably have contributed to this, but I have bought a sheet of 2 mm walnut and will have to shape and cut to fit,

I have put duck tape on the back of the capping, this will help it from splitting.

The next task will be the cutting of the holes for the cannons, I will get on with this shortly.

Over and out for now.

I am now doing the cut out's and liners of the top deck gun ports, I am measuring the cut out as per the instructions,

I have realised that its better to cut from the outside of the ship, As the saw cuts on the pull stroke, This will limit the amount of burr to the red ochre of the bulwarks. And this will require less remedial action to the inside.

I have cut the gun port liners, and I am painting the edges that go on the inside, this again will mean less work to achieving a good finish.

And I also have to cut, shape and fit the top capping.

And on with the other side now,

But I will say one thing, I wish I had fixed the top deck first, I would have then paralleled the height of the bulwarks of the deck, and if they were not high enough, I could of added a bit of height on, Then fixed the rubbing steaks to the outside, The heights of my bulwarks vary by about 2 mm, No great deal, But I have learnt what to do the next time.

Thanks Pete for your encouragement, I have shaped the cappings for the bulwarks, all sanded and I have given them a very slight overhang to the inside and outside, Just to break the line a bit. I have also painted the inside edge where it meets the red Ochre, just to minimise the cutting in of the painting,

I have also fitted, and pre painted the cappings to the lower area of the top deck, Its all starting to take shape.

I really need to get tool for turning the masts, I also need a jig saw for the cutting of the cappings to the front bulwarks, There were a couple of unimat 1 & 6 in 1 tools on e bay, but I missed out on them, Really need one now.

Those capping are the bees knees Mo, wished I had done that now instead of trying to use the ones that came with the kit.
Keep the good work going you are are going to have a dream of a vessel there.

Thanks Pete, I am busy doing the davit's for the anchors just now, quite a bit of geometry required there, will post a few pictures soon, I have just ordered a dremel vertical drill stand, don't know if they are any good or not, but will try out.
