I wonder if I could ask for some advice please?

Recently I purchased the Lady Nelson by Victory models.

The kit is listed as an upgraded version and I think they have added some stern decoration amongst other things.

My query is that in the original instructions and addendum to the updates they list the kit skeleton (keel ribs etc) as being made of ply which I am used to seeing. In this kit however these parts are made of MDF.

Bit worried as I am not sure how stable a material this is. Does anyone think I may have a problem with this please?

Kind regards

Tony

BigGrin Hi Tony
You probably already know this but MDF or medium density fibreboard is made from sawdust and a resin mixed together then compressed to get the required sheet, this can give a very stable board as far as i know it has slightly better stability than ply and tends not to warp in normal conditions.I dont think there will be any problems using this as hull formers and it would seem that kit makers are starting to use MDF more and more.
The only thing i would recomend when sanding this board would be the use of a face mask as the dust contains the resin and wood and apparently the resin isnt good to lungs when breathed in,hope this helps

In fact MDF dust is a known carcinogen, so as Andy says, a dust mask is recommended.

As Plywood costs soar, MDF is gradually being introduced as a modelling medium, in the main where it is unseen as framework but is up to the task.
