Here goes, A British warship was used to shell the center of Dublin during Easter 1916, What was her name? What other names did she have? And for what other reason is she well known? Good luck

His Majesty's Yacht Helga built in Liffey Dockyard in 1908 as a fishery protection cruiser and was named Helga II (the II was dropped when she was taken over by the Admiralty for escort & anti-submarine duties. She was handed over to the Irish Free State in August 1923 and was renamed Muirchu In April 1918 she wascredited with a submarine kill & carried a star on her funnel as an award for this, she also rescued 90 passengers from the RMS Leinster later in 1918 PS I would like to credit this to my history teacher Mr McKenzie who loved the more obscure moments in history & made sure that we knew them!! Okay, here goes, but no doubt I will have got something wrong When she was first built, she was called Helga 11. Around 1915, the 11 was dropped, and she was just known as the Helga (His Majesty's Yacht Helga) After being handed over to the Irish free state in 1923 and was renamed Muirchú. The other reason she is well known, is because of the submarine she sank off the Isle Of Man in 1918 ==================================== Damn, just got beaten to it!Model boats built so far:-

PS I would like to credit this to my history teacher Mr McKenzie who loved the more obscure moments in history & made sure that we knew them!! Hi Rob, Not quite what I was looking for but I will accept it as the correct answer because the site you have quoted was one which I found in order to ensure that the information was available before posing the question, she was also part of the first Irish Naval Service which was disbanded after the Civil war and was handed over to the Dept of Agriculture and Fisheries and was disarmed (stove pipe in place of a barrel) in 1930 the Irish Govt had to apply to the British for permission to have her rearmed as trawlers were refusing to comply with her orders and one even attacked her! Between 1923 and 1937 she was the only Irish vessel permitted to fly the tricolor, all other vessels had to fly the red duster, she was the only armed vessel available to the Irish Govt at the start of the Emergency. I have taken this info from "a history of the Irish Naval Service" by Aidan McIvor, For bonus points can you tell me what is the prefix given to Irish Naval vessels and what does it mean? and what are they named after? just a bit of fun I am sure that you will have no problem finding the answer Looking forward to see what you come up with

Direct translation yes, but as Éire is the official name of the state the more correct translation is ship of Ireland or Irish state ship, can you answer the question on the naming convention? and where did you learn you gaeilge? just curious

I thought that there must have been an Irish connection, not too many on this site from Ireland so I posted an easy question, by the way I am from Galway on the west coast, one of the most vibrant cities in the country and on the edge of Connemara, one of the most beautiful rugged landscapes around, on your next visit you you should try a different part of the country, I do not like Dublin, too impersonal, if you do want travel advice I have worked all over the country and can offer some tips if you wish

Oh, and Irish Naval Ships are named after figures in Celtic Mythology! sorry missed the second part, you are correct but female figures, caused a bit of controversy when one of of newest ships was named, because the then minister for defence's daughter happened to have the same name! conidence?

As I said if I can offer advice I am more than happy to help but only come the the west coast if the weather does not bother you, even in summer it can be bad, thats the price of living on the edge of the Atlantic! I have never been to bradford, only Liverpool and London, my best day was when my wife went shopping and I got to spend a full day in the British Museum, only regret was that it was not a week if anyone wants personal recommendations I am happy to oblige, perhaps a separate thread as there are now members from all over the globe

It only left me with half an hour to have a look at the Cutty Sark! Model boats built so far:-

Guys, sorry to be an old spoilsport and it is nice to hear about ones' adventures in life, so please don't take this with offence, it isn't intended, but as overseer of the quiz can I just politely remind you not to overdo the idle chat on the quiz thread as it only clogs it up and it can end up getting way off topic which then spoils the quiz for others? I did mention this in post #1, which I hope you've read, so could you please try to keep things relative to the questions and answers, as there are other places dedicated to general chat or you could use a PM if you wish??
Thanks!!!
Kev

There were many elements that made D-Day a success, but there were 2 major pre fabricated elements of the supply train that were absolutely vital & without which the continued presence of an allied invasion force in Europe would have been impossible... My question therefore is What were the 2 major prefabs called & what did each of them do? I will give a hint,1 is known by an acronym,I require the acronym & it's full name please.
