Hi chaps The recommended build fixture does not guarantee vertical accuracy and squareness.......In my humble opinion Check your build at former 16 and compare each side! Luckily, my build was quite close.....Only 1/16" difference My height dimension for reference only came out at 3 5/8"   The height checkers can be clamped to former 16 and left in position for as long as possible Bob

Added two more support checks at the bow end. The deck is now perfectly parallel to the base board Spotted that the bowsprit area was slightly out, by 0.030" Fitted a torque bar and heavy weight and it trued up after a few hours The PVA was probably not quite set yet, with this damp weather lately  Bob

I have now fitted height packers at the bows, stern and midships and placed heavy weights on top to settle it all down
It feels lovely and solid now
Anybody else out there, done the same?

Surely if you're stressing over it being out by 3 100ths of an inch, you're gonna be stressing throughout the entire build.
Is this actually noticeable to the human eye?

I used to make steel cabinets for Rolls Royce many years ago when I was a sheet metal worker, and even Rolls Royce wasnt as demanding with the tollerances. But well done Bob, you go for it! Model boats built so far:-

I'm sorry to say that 5 degree fluctuation will affect those tolerances. but good luck with the build though. bob the problem is this is a mass produced kit so there will be tolerance issues all the way, you could end up with some parts in your kit being cut at maximum tolerance and having to fit up against another part cut at minimum tolerance. i don't think .03" will make too much difference as even weather/central heating could affect the wood by this much. Come on you Jimmies

Hi Bob,
This is a first time build for me. I'm held up at the moment cos i'm waiting on replacement frames that came very badly warped. What I would like to ask though is, where did you get the clamps to hold the keel straight?

I realise that thirty thou wasn`t worth bothering with, but I had the chance to correct it, there and then, so I put it right!
I agree, the weather at the moment will affect the stability of the structure

The base board and angle clamps are from my previous model aero hobby and is really a fuselage jig, they are probably still avaiable....I`ll have a look round

as reading 0.030 inches dose not sound a lot till you put in mm then its 0.76mm or lets say just less than a mm some models a mm is quite a lot as a few found out when fitting the guns on the lower deck of the victory
