I think it was before then as Ligier stopped racing in 1996 and became Prost. Also the McLarens used to have the 'barcode' in the late 80's, certainly in 88 on the MP4/4.
I'm guessing it's either the British or German GP's but what year I don't know. Each country seemed to have different rules. It was first introduced in Germany 76 but only applied if the race was televised (from what I have read!!)
British GP in 82, cars used the barcode but the race was called the Malboro British GP and had billboards plastered around the track!

So near!!! I had a quick look to see if there were any earlier races but the footage is so bad, it's hard to tell!!
I did find a clip of the 76 German GP, but the Lotus had JPS and the Mclaren had Marlboro on. Like I say, from what I read, it only applied to televised events (so they could have run the logos in practice and qually, if not broadcast, but not the race itself)
Great question!

Under construction Sovereign of the Seas! 1200:1 HMS Victory (by Mantua) The Battleship Yamato (seriously considering building as an RC model)

LOL - I just happened to look on the site at that time.
OK - What year and GP were starting lights used for the first time and what did they replace?

Hmmm good question. They used to start races with the country that the race was being held in's national flag.
Im not sure but research suggests the first race to use the light system was the 1975 British GP at Silverstone. But i cant confirm that!!! Interestingly, the previous sponsorship question, regarding the 1977 German GP was the last to be started under a flag as a truck has destroyed the light gantry system!
Still looking for the exact race that it was first used at, it wasnt the 1976 Austrian GP, despite this particular GP being mentioned as the first in a few things ive found online....
