Correct! The 'factory' and hangers are all still there although they are now other businesses. Apparently they towed the Avro 707 down the A15 to RAF Waddington, which is just over there out our bedroom window BigGrin

RAF Waddington itself, obviously a Vulcan base for many years.BigGrin

Thanks TH, sorry Bob!! BigGrin

A British aircraft manufacturer was the first in the world to start a 'volume production' or 'production line' of a single type of aircraft. What was that company called, what was the aircraft called that was on the production line and how many of that type were built in the first production run?

It was the Wellington made by Vickers-Armstrongs and 183 were made in the first production run
Model boats built so far:-

Billings Cutty Sark
Scratch built twin IC RC Vosper MTB.
Scratch built rc electric hybrid.
Scratch built rc IC hydrofoil (ran happily on snow as well as water!)
Plus numerous numerous RC planes.

Under construction
Sovereign of the Seas!
1200:1 HMS Victory (by Mantua)
The Battleship Yamato (seriously considering building as an RC model)

In that case, it might have been the Short Brothers with the "Wright flyer" of which they built 6

OK,

It WAS the Short aircraft company and it WAS indeed a total of six built in that first production line. The Short Brothers had been granted a licence by the Wright Brothers to build six aircraft of the 'Wright Flyer' design, correct!! .... BUT the Short brothers didn't build their aircraft identical to the Wright design, there were some radical design differences between the two and they gave a name and type number to their aircraft which does NOT include the Wright name or any reference to the 'Wright Flyer', and that is what I'm looking for?

If nobody has the correct answer to the missing name by 5pm tomorrow, then I will post it up and we'll move on to the next question, otherwise this will stagnate.

Any more guesses anybody?? It's not that difficult a question really!!

And that's the one I am looking for!!! Well done Bob!!! BigGrin

It was basically a Wright Flyer, as I said, with some design changes and a new type name of Shorts' own choice, which was indeed the Short 'No.1' Biplane and there was six built on the worlds' first aircraft production line.

Your question Bob??

Hello Bob,

I think you are a U2 Spy plane and you are either over Afghanistan/Iraq or based at Beale Air Force Base in California, U.S.A??

If you are then you will know why you need a car to land by watching this video!!:

Hello all,

I have sent a PM to Bob at least 48 hours ago, requesting that he check back on the question he had set, but as yet I've not had a response from him and the PM remains as yet unread, so I'll have to assume that he is away or won't be back on MS anytime soon. Therefore as overseer of the quizzes and in order to keep things flowing and maintain interest, I will have to set another question by proxy as per the Quiz rules in post #1.

My Question:

The F-15 Eagle has been cited as one of the greatest jet fighters of all time and as yet, not one has ever been shot down in combat, which is testament to the great thought that went into it's design. The designing of such an aircraft was initiated by the need to combat the threat from a seriously powerful and dangerous Russian aircraft in the 1960's.

What was that Russian aircraft who's major threat brought about the urgent need to design the F-15 Eagle. I want the manufacturers' name, the type number and the NATO nickname for it??

That would be the MIG 25 'foxbat', and when one was flown from china to japan (pilot defected with it) and american engineers examined it, they found the technology used was about a decade behind theirs. ( They found vacuum valves being used in the radar)
I smile because i have NO IDEA whats going on :)

Amazing to think that the F-15 began its' life way back in the late '60s, seems like such a modern aircraft really and even more amazing that the Mig-25 was already in service before they'd even put pen to paper on the F-15 design!! Interesting stuff about the Mig-25 vacuum valves Smuggler, thanks for that!!

The Mig-25 'Foxbat' is indeed correct - your go Smuggler?

Ok, here goes .....

on 6 September 1939, 2 aircraft were shot down by a spitfire, the first and second shot down by a spitfire.

What were the aircraft?

Name the pilots of the 2 aircraft?

Which pilot died?

That would be the "Battle of Barking Creek".

The 2 planes shot down were both Hurricanes.

The pilot who didnt survive was Pilot Officer Montague Hulton-Harrop.

The other pilot who was shot down and lived to tell the tale was Frank Rose.
